Honored Soldier Gets
Guard Duty Relief

Thousands of U.S. servicemen
will envy the honor recently
accorded to SP3 Melvin A. Mar-
kowitz, a Detroiter stationed at
Fort Knox, Ky. Markowitz has
been permanently relieved from
guard duty in recognition for
his careful preparation for pe-
riodic guard mount.
He has been awarded the
title of "colonel's orderly" after
being honored 15 times for his
guard preparation. The soldier
was presented with a certificate
of achievement signed by Maj.
Gen. John L. Ryan. Markowitz'
commanding officer, Col. F. P.
Field, has directed that the
soldier's name be removed from
the guard roster.
Specialist Markowitz had to
have his brass and boots shined
to perfection in order to outdo
the 25 to 45 other soldiers he
competed against in each of the
15 guard mounts. His weapon,
uniform, brass, boots, w e b
equipment and helmet all had
to be "standing tall."
The relieved soldier is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Louis L. Marko-
witz, of 18494 Hartwell.
