Jessie Sampter's Appeal to Ishmael Still Valid Today

English and Hebrew, all this
occupied her time day and
night. In March 1938, she had
an attack of pneumonia; she
left the Hospital of Petach
Tikvah fully recovered, but was
stricken by malaria in August.
She kept on working, how-
ever, finishing a translation of
Bialik's children's poems, "Far
Across the Sea." Feeling her
end near, she wrote with a fe-
verish speed, commenting on
Kohelet which was published
after her death, on Nov. 11,
1938.

Ishmael, my brother, lift- not
your hand against mine.
Have we not one father? Is
not this land His shrine?
We are of one flesh and blood,
we have one need and hun-
ger.
Ishmael, lift not your hand —
1 am the younger.
These words, penned by
Jessie Ethel Sampter, are as
applicable today as they were
when written by the great
Jewish" poetess in 1929 at the
outbreak of the Arab riots.
Yet, Miss Sampter, who was
deeply devoted to the Zionist
concept of a Jewish state and
who resided in Palestine dur-
ing the last 20 years of her life,
never lived to see the re-birth
of Israel.
Imagine the glorious verse
that would have flowed off her
pen now, as it did after the
riots of '29, when she wrote
this poem dedicated to Haganah:
Necessity makes murderers
of us all
If we would keep on living.
The gentlest and the sweet-
est of us all
Grows harsh and unforgiv-
ing.
And he whose heart was
wise
To prune and shape a tree
Bears in his hands and eyes
The lance for injury.
