Nahum Sokolow: Reminder
of Eminent Scholarship

Best Wishes an
the New. Year

Sokolow, a great journalist, a
fervent Zionist and a prolific
author who wrote in five
languages.
He was the descendant of the
famous Cabalist Nathan Sha-
piro, whose grandson, Samuel,
an early Hassidic rabbi, settled
in Sokolow, from which the
family took its name.
Nahum was barn in 1860 in
Wysograd. His parents moved
to Plock when he was five-
years-old, and here he was
schooled thoroughly and was
an eager student of the codes,
Bible and Talmud. Here, also,
he developed his talent as a
writer at an early age.
As a youth, while still
wearing the traditional kaf-
tan and peoth, he immersed
himself in the study of history
and languages. Thanks to a
brilliant memory and keen
perception, Nahum became
one of the best-informed
minds in his native Poland
and -soon his fame spread all
over Europe and Russia.

May the New Year Bring Peace
and Happiness to All Mankind

Together with a few - young,
courageous friend s, Nahum
started publishing a hand-
written newspaper in Hebrew
and in his leisure hours trans-
lated two of Schiller's five-act
dramas "The Robbers" and
"Mary Stuart" into Hebrew.
At 18, he married the pretty
daughter of wealthy Isaac H.
Segal in Makow and for the
next five years, his family,
according to custom, was pro-
vided for by his father-in-law.
This allowed -Nahum to devote
much time to his studies.
After he failed miserably as
a businessman, he decided to
devote his life to journalism,
and in 1875, he began contribut-
ing to "Hatzefirah," a Warsaw
weekly newspaper in Hebrew.
Soon he became its editor. His
articles found their way into
other publications.
Sokolow, who in the begin-
ning, had .preferred Argentina
to the -Holy Land for Jewish
immigration, attended the --first
Zionist Congress in Basle,
Switzerland, in 1897, as a
journalist and wrote objective
and critical reports on the
meetings . Later, however, he
changed his mind, full-heart-
edly endorsed Herzl's Zionism
and gaye it prominent space in
the Hebrew and Yiddish press.
After Herzl's death in 1904,
Sokolow became general secre-
tary to the Zionist party now
under the leadership of David
Wolfsohn. With his family, So-
kolow moved to the old German
town of Cologne where he
edited "Die Welt," Herzl's
Zionist periodical.
At the outbreak of World
War I in 1914, Sokolow moved
to London and joined Chaim
Weizmarm in his Zionist ac-
tivities. He proved • to be an
exceedingly able diplomat for
important missions on the
Continent.
He was responsible for se-
curing the Unanimous ap-
proval of the Balfour -Declara-
tion by the French and Italian
governments and by the some-
what reluctant governments
of Poland, Roinania and South
Africa.
At the Versailles Peace Con-
ference, Sokolow, acting as
president of the Committee of
Jewish Delegations, submitted
his carefully drawn up pro-
posals on Jewish minority
rights.
Chairman of the Zionist Ex-
ecutive from 1920 to 1931, he
visited the United States many
times on Zionist missions. When
Weizmann tendered his resigna-
tion as president of the Zionist
Organization, Sokolow was un-
animously elected as his suc-
cessor and held this office for
four years.
Later, he became president of
the Keren Bayesod (Palestine
Foundation Fund), and head of
a special committee of Hebrew
