An AJP Feature

Every man wants to be con-
sidered a gentleman, and every
woman a lady. Whether en-
titled to this honorable name
or not, we call ourselves ladies
and gentlemen, and we are so
addressed.
What is a gentleman? May
we not answer that question
in the words. of William of
Wykeham, the founder of the
ancient Winchester School in
England—"Manners maketh the
man!" Good manners possess
an unmistakable grace and
charm. They are t h e out-
growth of certain inner quali-
ties of self-respect and respect
for others. They adbrn alike
peasant and prince.
There is only one standard
that should be universal
among men; not the standard
of wealth or power or popu-
larity—a plutocrat may be vile
and a peasant or a pauper may
be as wonderful as Amos, the
farmer, or Martin Luther, the
miner's son; not man's - origin
counts, or his ancient pedigree;
not his past or the memory of
his glory or his shame; but the
present .. . his true worth, his
attitude toward others . . . his
manners. For "Manners mak-
eth the man!"

Based on the TV program,
"Scripture Sketches," conducted
by Lois Fisher over Station
KRON, San Francisco, this able
author has published a child-
ren's
book,
"Bible Picture
Stories:" ,
It is in the form of brie f
narrations and accompanyin
cartoons. It begins with the Is
raelites in Egypt, it tells th e
story of Pharaoh's oppression
of the Israelites and of Moses
and of the wanderings of th e
Israelites in the desert. This i s
the major part of this book.
Lois Fisher then proceeds, in

of the walls of Jericho and the
arrival of - the Israelites in the
Promised Land.
Samson and Delilah, the bat-
tles with the Philistine, Samuel
and Saul, Naomi, Ruth, Boaz
and David, follow and complete
the 30-page book for children.
It is a good story and will be
found enjoyable by the young-
sters. The drawings have a
limited appeal, - and the stories
from the Bible are incomplete.
