MONTREAL, (WJA) — The
number of Jews in Canada in
June 1957 was indicated to be
241,000, and that of metropoli-
tan Montreal 100,000, according
to an estimate prepared as part
of the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress' national research pro-
gram.
In 1951, when the last offi-
cial • census was taken, Jews in
Canada. numbered 204,836, and
the Jewish population of Mont.:
real 80,829.
The total increase in the pop-
ulation of Canada during 1951-
57 is estimated at 36,164 of
whom 20,414 were Jewish in t=
migrants admitted to Canada
during that period. The addi-
tional number was attributed
to excess of births over deaths.
The total increase in the Jew-
ish population of metropolitan
Montreal during the same peri-
od was 19,171.
It is anticipated that the Jew-
ish population of metropolitan
Montreal will have passed the
100,000 mark before the end of
1957 and that the total Jewish
population of Canada will ex-
ceed 250,000 in 1961 when the
next census will be taken.
