The Independence of Zionism
A new Zionist Organization
which does not call itself Zion-
ist was born the other day, but
we have a suspicion that it was
still-born ... The parents of this
organization, which calls itself
American Jewish League for Is-
rael, are respectable Zionists,
some of whom played a signifi-
cant role in the development of
the American Zionist movement
. . . Louis Lipsky, who is said
to be the mastermind who sup-
plied the ideology for the
League, is unquestionably the
dean of American Zionism and
a leader who helped make Zion-
ist history for a half century.
. . . Without him nobody would
take the new organization too
seriously . . . For Lipsky is gen-
erally acknowledged a clear
thinker, a leader with a deep
sense of responsibility ... Then
how come it will be asked that
he is the good-wife of the
League . . . Well, the truth is
that Louis Lipsky, who at 80 has
lost none of his youthfulness,
did not promote the League .. .
He did however give it his
blessing and thus lent it the
great prestige of his name.
The American Jewish League
for Israel justifies its existence
on the -grounds that Zionists in
this country have no business
to mix into eternal Israeli af-
fairs. And since, according to
the leaders of the League, the
Zionist Organization of America
identifies itself with the Gen-
eral Zionists in Israel, the
League will provide a forum
for the many thousands Zionists
who want to remain neutral, so
to speak, and remain aloof from

party politics in Israel . . . On
the surface this kind of reason-
ing seems logical ... An Ameri-
can Zionist should not have to
subscribe to the ideology of a
political party in Israel . . . In
fact, however, this basic prin-
ciple had very little to do with
the formation of the American
Jewish League : .. A member of
the Zionist Organization . of
America does not have to spon-
sor any political ideology . . .
Nobody compels him to do so
and the leadership of the ZOA
has at no time proclaimed itself
wedded to the General Zionist
party in Israel ... It is of course
no secret . that there are indi-
viduals among the official Zion-
ist leadership in this country,
men who have pronounced sym-
pathies for one or . the other
political party in Israel . . . It
could not be otherwise because
these individuals are men of
conviction who in the course of
their Zionist activities have de-
veloped preferences and dislikes
. . . But it would be highly ri-
diculous to assume that only
the leaders of the ZOA hold
such views while the men, who
have affiliated themselves with
the League, are indifferent to
the Israeli scene . . . The im-
portant thing to remember is
that the ZOA constitutionally is
not affiliated with any political
party in Israel . . . If therefore
any of the individual leaders of
the ZOA are involved in Israeli
politics, then their individual
policy should be criticised and
fought out on the convention
floor of the ZOA.
To abandon the ZOA to form
a new organization and to pro-
claim this new organization the
rightful heir of the American
Zionist movement is indeed
irresponsible . . . One_ cannot
abruptly eradicate decades of
history just because one dis-
sents from a temporary leader-
ship of a movement . . . We
say temporary because the lead-
ership of the ZOA is subject to
election by the members of the
organization . . . Lipsky more
than any other Zionist leader
has insisted on democratic prin-
ciples in the Zionist movement
of America . . . When he dif-
fered with Justice Brandeis, he
did not walk out but fought for
his beliefs on the convention
floor . . . And the Brandeis sup-
porters, while they did take a
walk, did not project a rival
Zionist organization to advocate
their dissenting views . . . The.
American Jewish League for
Israel will at best remain a
committee of respectable Zion-
ists with no mass basis . . . If
the League persists it can only
hope to function along a pattern
the American Jewish Commit-
tee discarded years ago, that is,
on the basis of a group of self-
perpetuating, well meaning indi-
viduals who believe that they
are the ordained leaders of the
Jewish people . . ., But the
American Jewish Committee
recognized its error and changed
its format . .. The League will
have to realize that it cannot
become a substitute or even a
supplementary structure in the
Zionist movement . . . And we
predict that Lipsky will be the
first to acknowledge it.

HEBREW COMMUNITY
DAY SCHOOL
to be meeting at 18495 Wyoming Avenue
(north of Curtis)
Registrations are now being accepted for
Nursery, Kindergarten, and First Grade
To register your child, or to obtain a brochure outlining the
program in detail, contact Mrs. Fayga Dombey, registrar, at
LI. 6-4610, or Mrs. Ruth Levi, Assoc. registrar, LI. 8-0613.
Purpose of the Day School
To give Jewish children integrated
training and schooling thoroughly in keeping with the heritage
and traditions of Judaism and with the concepts of American
democracy.
What are its advantages to the child — At
least one advantage is
excellent Public School and Hebrew instruction "under one
roof," permitting afternoons FREE for other creative and recrea-
tional activities. Due to limited numbers in a classroom, more
individual attention can be devoted to each child.
The success of Day Schools —
Growing annually, the Day School
movement during the past few years has seen the establishment
of over 160 such schools in the United States.
The Hebrew Community Day School is the second such school
in Detroit.
A general meeting of all sponsors and interested parents will
be held on Monday evening, June 3, at 8:30 p.m., at 18495
Wyoming. Anyone may feel free to attend. Questions will be
welcomed.
