tinguished Americans were
awarded honorary doctorates in
science at ceremonies on the
new campus here of the Israel
Institute of Technology. Premier
David Ben-Gurion was present
during the ceremonies.
Recipients of the degrees were
Gerard Swope, honorary life
president of General . Electric
Company and a friend of the
‘institute; F. Julius _Fobs, geol.=
ogist and .petroleum engineer
who has directed studies of
Israel's natural resources, and
Abraham Tulin, chairman of the
board of the American Technion
Society.
Graduate studies at the Israel
Institute of Technology have
been enlarged and 25 percent
more graduate students are reg-
istered at the Technion this year
than last. The largest increase

dents. Candidates for masters
degree's number 120 this year
against 98 last year, while can-
didates for doctorates are 37
against 26 last year.

In a letter to the Chicago
Sentinel, Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Gaynor asserted that 11 shots
were fired into their home near
their sleeping children, "win-
dows were shattered by rocks
the size of our heads, and pieces
of iron."
The Gaynors said they "want-
ed it known" that the Negro
family was paying no higher
rent than the previous white
tenant and that they "had no
intention of selling our build-
and permit overcrowding."
The Gaynors said they Chose
the Negro family because they
were civic minded and con-
cerned about a proper environ-
ment to raise their children.
"We are particularly troubled
by the bogotry and vicious gos-
sip of some of our Jewish neigh:-
bors and this is the main reason
we are writing to you," the
couple declared.
The letter concluded with an
appeal "to help restore our 'Jew-
ish people to their senses before
we develop another Hitler Ger-
many."

Conference of Jewish Social
Studies, which seeks to promote
a better understanding of the
position of the Jews in the mod-
ern world, held its annual meet-
ing, with more than 200 social
scientists, educators and com-
munal lea d e r s participating.
The central subject discussed
at the meeting was a paper on
"The Changing Role of the
American Rabbi"- delivered by
Rabbi Hertzberg of Englewood,
N. J.
Dr. Israel S. Wechsler, inter-
nationally known neurologist
and Jewish communal leader,
was re-elected president of the
Conference for the next year.
