HAIFA, (JTA) — Both man-
agement and workers at the Ata
textile factory continued to re-
fuse to negotiate with each oth-
er "at the same table," as a gov-
ernment mediator continued his
efforts to end a strike which has
already caused an increase in
textile prices and given rise to
a clash between pickets and
police.
Tension subsided, however,
as only a few pickets were
placed in front of Ata retail
outlets and made no attempt to
interfere with customers enter-
ing the shops. Meanwhile, three
striking workers have initiated
a test case by filing suits for
their April wages.
The government announced
that the April, cost of living in-
dex had risen four points over
March to a peak of 265, guaran-
teeing an automatic cost of liv-
ing bonus for employes in in-
dustry, white collar jobs and
civil servants next July unless
prices drop drastically before
then. A year ago, the index was
246, based on September 1951
as 100.

Aboard a freedom ship bound for Israel, a Jewish refugee
from Egypt gets the documents that will start him on the way
to a new life as soon as the ship docks at Haifa. With hundreds
of Egypt's 66,000 Jews becoming uprooted refugees every day,
with 14,000 Jews who escaped the Soviet terror in Hungary
seeking assistance, and with tens of thousands of additional
Jewish refugees streaming out of other lands of danger and
oppression in Europe and the Middle East, the United Jewish
Appeal has , called upon the American Jewish community to
raise a $100,000,000 Emergency Rescue Fund to save and resettle
in Israel and other free countries a minimum of 100,000 en-
dangered and dispossessed Jews during 1957.

WILLIAlaS TOWN, Mass.
(TTA)—Although religious and
racial discrimination in college
fraternities on the Williams Col-
lege campus has decreased as
a result of the administration's
order in 1955 to end discrimina-
tory membership bars, there is
still some prejudice, according
to a student study released here.
The student council's commit-
tee on discrimination found that
in general the atmosphere on
campus had improved and
could be expected to continue to
improve. However, it noted that
in several Greek letter societies
Jews . were barred as a result
of an "unwritten agreement"
- between the local chapter and
the national organization.

Most fraternities, the report
continued, admitted Jews to
membership but limited the
number who belong at one time.
Since 1953, it reported, the
number of Jews who became
fraternity members has doubled.
