Fete Golden Wedding

MR. and MRS. JAMES SIMON

Golden wedding anniversary
celebrants Mr. and Mrs. James
J. Simon were honored at a
party held recently at Rainbow
Terrace. Participating in the
, celebration were the couples'
four daughters, Mrs. lsther
Rosenberg, Mrs. Minnie Plas-
kove, Mrs. Frances Lutz and
Sally Eller, and son, George
Simon, plus nine grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
The affair was highlighted by
a "This is Your Life" dramatiza-
tion, in which the children and
their families participated.
Mr. and Mrs. Simon were
married in New York. They are
charter members of the City of
Hope, Caroline Friendship Club
and Pinsker Progressive Society.
Mr: Simon has been in the real
estate and building business ever
since he came to Detroit 43
years ago. •
He served for many years as
an official of the Election Board,
of which he was chief registrar
during World War T.

U of M Student Wins
First Couzens Grant
William Gamson, 23, a grad-
uate student in social psychol-
ogy, at the University of Michi-
gan, has been selected as the
first winner of the Leon A.
Cousens Graduate Scholarship
in Human Relations. The choice
was announced by Mrs. Mil-
dred' M; Jeffrey, community
relations director of UAW-
AFL-CIO, fund chairman, and
Dr. Harold Sheppard, associate
professor of Sociology at Wayne
State University, chairman of
the fund's 1957 selection com-
mittee.
The announcement was made
at the 11 annual presentation
ceremonies of Workmen's Circle
Branch 463-E at which Miss
Sarah Robinson, principal of
Jefferson Junior High School,
Justice Talbot Smith of the
Michigan Supreme Court, and
Neil Staebler, chairman of the
Democratic State Central Com-
mittee, were honored.
Gamson is in the doctoral
program at the university. He
is a native of Philadelphia, and
received his B.A. degree in
government from Antioch Col-
lege in Ohio. In 1956, Michigan
awarded him an M. A. in so-
ciology. - He was on the staff of
former U.S. Senator Herbert
H. Lehman.
The Cousens Fund grant of
$300 is for one year. The fund
was established by 100 promin-
ent citizens, friends of the late
Leon A. Cousens, a Detroit
labor attorney, and long-time
leader in the Workmen's
Circle, Jewish fraternal order.

Galician Auxiliary Slates
Mother - Daughter Event

The Ladies Auxiliary of the
First Galician Society of Detroit
will hold its annual mother and
daughter banquet on Wednesday
evening, at Rainbow Terrace.
The program will highlight
several musical renditions by
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman, of
Beth Abraham Synagogue.

Karbal, Mark Directors

The appointments of Harold
Karbal and Muni Mark as_ di-
rectors of Farband Camp and
Kinderwelt during the coming
season was announced this week
by. Berl Hearshen, chairman of
the Farband Camp committee.
Karbal, who is assistant prin-
cipal of the Vernor Elementary
School, will direct the adminis-
trative functions, including reg-
istration. Mark will be in charge
of the Kinderwelt, counselor
staff and camper program.
• Mark, pregently executive di-
rector of the Sholem Aleichem
Institute, has taught in Yiddish
schools since 1941, did graduate
work at the New School of So-
cial Research and was director
and assistant director of several
Eastern camps.
The camp committee for the
29th season is comprised of
Morris Gelfand an David Sis-
lin, vice-chairmen; Bertha Ros-
enthal, secretary; Harry Linber,
treasurer; Manuel Salinger, fi-
nance committee chairman,

Lt. Col. and Mrs. Joseph H. Gossman and sons, Sanford,
Robert and David, are back at their home on San Juan Dr., after
returning to New York aboard the SS United States in time for
the Passover holidays. Col. Gossman has completed a Iwo-year
tour of duty with the U.S. Army Dental Corps, during which
he was stationed at Verdun, France. ,
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Keats, of Lauder Ave., vacationed re-
cently at the Riviera, in Las Vegas, Nev.
A falafel party was given recently by Mr. and Mrs. Norbert
Nemon, of Oak . Park, for a few of their friends. Falafel,
Mrs. Nemon says, is that popular Israeli dish which is com-
parable to meatless hamburgers.
