dent, all divisions are surging
forward. with record-breaking
oeports.
The mechanical trades di-
vision, headed by Robert Tre-
peck, is setting a new record
with $1,300,000 — $100,000
more than the division raised
in 1948,
The real estate and building
division, the other million dol-
lar group in the Detroit cam-
paign, is closing in on its
$1,241,980 mark attained in 1956.
The food division which came
within $12,000 of equalling its

1948 record of $552,187, last
year, has raised $575,000 to date
and is bringing in more pledges
daily.
The services division, which
had a better year in 1956 than
in 1948, has, to date, achieved
05 per cent of its 1956 total of
$198,022.
The arts and crafts division,
which raised almost $100,000
more in 1948 than in 1956, has
surpassed its 1956 total of $205,-
991 and is working toward
achieving its 1948 figure.
Another division which sur-
passed its 1948 figure last year
was the professional division
which raised $662,937 in 1956.
With 77 per cent of its 1956
total of $670,944 raised, the
mercantile division is on its
way to surpassing last year's
goal.
The women's division raised
$20,000 more in 1948 than it •
did in 1956 when it collected
$570,436 from women who
make pledges in their own
name.
Traditionally late starters, the
metropolitan and treasury gifts
divisions are below 50 per cent
of last year's totals of $23,213
and $21,345, but the leaders
aim to attain last year's goals.
The junior division achieved
115 per cent of last year's
total of $35,824 and is striv-
ing for 125 per cent,

Michigan leaders of the United
Jewish Appeal plan to initiate
the participation of the-state of
Michigan in the $100,000,006
Emergency Rescue Fund of the
UJA, Mermelstein said.
Abrahami, a graduate of Ox-
ford, has worked with immi-
grant absorption and develop-
ment programs in Israel and
North Africa. He served in the
British Army in World War II,
saw action at Dunkirk and in
Burma, winning several decora-
tiOns.
Coming to Israel in 1948, he
was the commanding officer,
holding the rank of major, of
an Israel military hospital in
Jerusalem during the siege of
that city.
"The_ Michigan Leadership
Conference will make a su-
preme effort to play a major
role in the vital 1957 UJA cam-
paign," Mermelstein said.
The delegates will meet at 10 .
a.m. for a morning session. This
will be followed at 12:30 p.m.
by a luncheon and afternoon
session. Jack 0. Lefton of Fern-
dale is honorary chairman of
the conference.
