This week, Leonard Simons,
who was a member of the De-
troit delegation, received a
letter from Capt. Pe'er in which
he wrote:
"It is very heartening to learn
that Detroit, as well as the rest
of the United States Jewry, is
behind us in these hard times,
when we call in vain upon the
world for a little bit of justice
—asking nothing more than be-
ing allowed to live in peace.
That we have no territorial am-
bitions we have stressed again
and again and also proved our
good will by retreating from all
the Sinai, which our army had
conquered. As for our work
here—well, you saw for your-
self; all we want is to be per-
mitted to continue building the
country and receive and re-
,those of our brothers
who have no other place to go
but managed to reach. here and
who .are, alas, nearly always
destitute.
"You . mention that you were
surprised by what occurred
after you left Israel because,
during your stay, you did not
notice a • general feeling of
nervousness or undue trouble.
We are used to living under
tension and, if we would give
way to hysteria or nervousness,
we would not be able to carry
on. We have learned to take
just about everything in our
stride."
Capt. Pe'er originally came
from Poland. His parents, broth-
ers and sisters were murdered
in Nazi concentration camps.
He alone was permitted to work
jn a labor camp because he was
young and strong. At the time
the Americans landed in Ger-
many, he and others in his
camp were moved to another
camp where they were to be
doomed to death. Together with
five others, an escape was tried
but four of them were shot and
he and another boy managed to
get away, eventually landing in
Israel. He is now married and
the father of two children. He
told Simons
"After what I've gone through,
I'm not afraid of anything that
can ever happen to me again as
long as I Jive, I will fight to
my death to defend Israel's
existence because of what it
means to me and to all the
other Jews like me who need
Israel so that we can have a
place to live as decent human
beings are entitled to• live."
