A Detroit serviceman is one
of many Jewish GIs in Europe
to write home this week seeking
assistance from the American
Jewish community in keeping
open the KaiserslaiItern Service-
mens' Center in Germany.
In a letter addressed to his sis-
ter-in-laW, Mrs. Jack Weinshel-
baum, of 2749 Tyler, Maj. Her-
man Marmelstein, attached to
the Sembach • Air Force Base,
Sembach, Germany, writes that
because of a shortage of funds
the service club will be forced
to close its doors on April 30.
The Kaiserslautern Center, he
writes, is the only Jewish Serv-
icemen's Center in all of Europe.
-Under the auspices of the
National Jewish Welfare Board,
the center maintains a diversi-
fied program, including sab-
bath suppers, language classes,
lectures, discussion groups, holi-
day celebrations, "bagel and
lox" brunches and recreational
activities.
The JWB, which depends for
funds primarily from the United
Jewish Appeal, has been facing
a deficit budget and now must
suspend or curtail operations in
many areas, a JWB spokesman
in Detroit said. -
If enough funds — $25,000 in
all — are received, however,
specifically ear-marked for the
Kaiserslautern Center, it can
still keep open its doors. A simi-
lar threat of closing was fore-
stalled three years ago when
the Center was located in Heid-
_
elberg.
Funds should be sent immedi-
ately to the JWB, 9999 Broad-
street, Detroit, or 145 E. 32nd
St., New York, stating that the
money is to keep open the
Kaiserslautern Center.
