ANNUAL DINNER OF THE.

In Honor of

RABBI ISAAC STOLLMAN

Saddened by the loss of his
Egyptian homeland, this refu-
gee Jew contemplates the fu-
ture thoughtfully while en-
route to Israel: Once there,
agencies supported by the
United Jewish Appeal will
help him in making a new and
independent life. With 10,000
foreign, stateless and native
Jews already driven out by
Nasser, it is expected that
most of Egypt's 50,000 Jewish
population will be out by

Dinner

Rabbis

The Vaad Harabonim was or-
ganized 18 years ago in response
to the acute needs that were
then existing in our Jewish Corn-
munity. The Kashruth situation
was in dire need of improvement;
its supervision needed organiza-
tion; its standards had to be
established; and the religious,
spiritual and cultural activities
of our Jewish Community needed
coordination. No longer was it
possible for individual rabbis to
meet these demands effectively.
It was under these conditions
that the Vaad Harabonim was
then organized.
The function of the Vaad
Harabonim is to assure that
every person who so desires shall
be able to adhere to his religious
principals. Being a community-
wide institution its responsibili-
ties ever increase with the growth
of the Jewish population.

Committee

and Merkaz

Mindful of the heavy and in-

creasing responsibilities of the

Vaad Harabonim, a group of

dedicated men under the chair-

manship of David J. Cohen, or-

ganized the Merkaz. Since the

Merkaz was organized, it ha-s

registered a notable record to

its credit. The Merkaz serves as

the coordinationg body of the

traditional synagogues of our

Jewish community. In that ca-

pacity it also publishes a month-

ly bulletin of the activities of

the traditional religious Jewish

Community of Detroit.
