More Than 20% of Egyptian Jewry 'Safe from Egypt
Reaches Europe; Migration Continues in a New Home
ATHENS, (JTA)—The total
of Egyptian Jewish refugees ar-
riving in Europe since Novem-
ber reached 10,025 representing
more than 20 percent of the
total Egyptian Jewish popula-
tion, according to Charles H.
Jordan, Joint Distribution Com-
mittee general director.
The refugees will be cared
for while in Athens by the
Council of Greek Jewish corn-
munities. Passage and other
help is being provided by the
United Hias Service for those
choosing to go to other coun-
tries than Israel.
All of the Jews were searched
before boarding to the Misr and
many personal possessions con-
fiscated. Each family was per-
mitted to take less than $15 in
cash and $700 in travelers
checks against accounts frozen
in England.
Refugees who arrived in
Rome from Egypt told of con-
tinued oppression, including the
desecration of the Jewish ceme-
tery in Cairo by. armed Egyptian
thugs. They said that a con-
siderable number of headstones
were overturned and various
graves dug up.

all Italian nationals, staged a

In New York, the American
Jewish Congress concluded a
two-day joint meeting of its
national executive and adminis-
trative • committees with the
adoption of a resolution calling
on the U. S. Government to
give hasten to the expelled
Jews.
The resolution also asked
President Eisenhower to inter-
vene with Egyptian President
Col. Nasser to- halt his policy
of anti-JeWish persecution. It
urged the American delegation
to the United Nations to take
the lead in the UN General As-
sembly for action against
Egypt's violation of human
rights.
• Expressing its approval of the
Eisenhower Doctrine as "the
first step" in the formulation
of an overall American policy
for the area, the American
Jewish Congress nevertheless
went on. record as warning that
unless the program is broad-
ened to deal with the Arab-
Israel conflict, "it will prove in
the • Middle East, but even for
its immediate purpose of deter-
ring Communist aggression."
Another resolution voiced
"dismay" at the moves under-
taken at the United Nations to
force the unconditional- with-
drawal of Israeli forces from
the Sinai Peninsula and the
Gaza Strip, with no provisions
made for the security of Israel's
borders and the free use of in-
ternational waterways.
The •AJC also called on the
U. S. State Department to lift
its ban on travel to the Middle
East. A report on .13%. S. immi-
gration policy proposed "dras-
tic overhauling of the McCar-

way in which the _ U. S. can
deal fairly and adequately with
the problem of Hungarian and
Egyptian refugees."
National Commander William
Carmen, at the national execu-
tive committee of the Jewish
War Veterans, meeting in New
York, called upon the American
Government and the American
people "to open the doors of the
United States to those refugees
from Egyptian enslavement who
wish to come here." He referred
to Premier Nasser of Egypt as
"a new embryo of evil which
has risen in the world disregard-
ing morality and decency as
Hitler had done."
