`Give a Gift' Day Planned for Aug. 30 Excels in Concert
The Department of Michigan
Jewish War Veterans will spon-
sor its annual "Give a Gift to
a Yank Who Gave" program
today, according to an annuonce-
ment by Larry Gubow, depart-
ment commander.
An official proclamation,
signed by Acting Mayor Louis
C. Miriani, calls attention to the
celebration, and authorizes pub-
lic solicitation to raise funds for
gifts to be given on the holidays
to patients in Veterans Admin-
istration hospitals.
The coordinating committee
planning the day-long observ-
ance includes Jay Schwartz, Jo-
sephine Fane, Ben Desenberg
and Ted Bale.
"Give a Gift to a Yank Who
Gave" was conceived originally
by Eddie Cantor, the Jewish
radio, television and stage star.
Since the end of World War II,
JWV has carried out the pro-
gram by visiting patients and
distributing gifts on Christmas
Day, when members of other
veteran groups are spending
time with their families.
