Bible Stories Scroll
Discovered in Israel
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — A
scroll containing stories from
Genesis, Noah's biography,
Abraham's journey into Egypt
and a description of Sarah's
beauty, among other matters,
was described here by Yigal
Yadin, Hebrew University ' ar-
chaeologist.
Speaking at a press confer-.
ence at the University, Dr. Ya-
din explained that the scroll,
found in the Judean desert, is
not, as was first thought, a
Scroll of Lemech, although it
does contain stories in which
Lem e c h features, including
conversations in which he dis-
cusses his belief that his wife
has -borne a child who is actual--
ly the "son of God." The scroll
also contains, said Dr. Yadin
who deciphered it, a description
of the war of the four kings."

JERUSALEM — I spent last week in a nationally inspired
Israel. I came at a time when an historic decision of - self-defense
had to be made.
The land was darkened, blacked out at night. The youth had
been mobilized to remove the concealed marauders of the fron-
tiers. There were continuous radio announcements in Hebrew
and Arabic.
Israel could no longer endure the strain of waiting passively
for the execution of the publicly announced plan of Colonel
Nasser and his fellow-conspirators of Jordan and Syria to destroy
the Israeli nation.
The extraordinary store of military equipment captured
in the Sinai desert battle is the best evidence of the massive
preparations made by the Egyptians to attack Israel with all
the power they could muster. To have waited for the blow
to be struck would have been criminal folly.
National security made it imperative for Israel to defend
herself without delay. The menace has been extirpated to a
large, extent and Israel today breathes easier than she did a
week ago.
The futile by-play of diplomacy, always talking and never
being able to act, forces a decision upon which the future of
the United Nations depends.
I do not doubt that Americans who are acquainted by now
with the facts will express their sympathy and good-will for
Israel and its gallant struggle to maintain its sovereignty and-
freedom. Its objectives are to establish peace and fraternity with
the Arab peoples and economic and cultural stability in the
region.
-
The spirit of Israel's Jews — their discipline, loyalty and will-
ingness to sacrifice — has been a source of pride to all of us
who had the privilege of witnessing the heroic behavior in these
trying days.
They have struck an effective blow for freedom everywhere,
and in the final reckoning, it will be found that they contributed
as effectively to the cause of freedom for the Arab peoples of
the Middle East as for themselves.
