Eyebrows on the University of
-Michigan campus were con-
siderably raised when a Nazi
swastika was seen hanging from
the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house.
When I asked him why the
flag was flown, the president of
the gentile social fraternity,
Gibb Richards replied, "I- have
no comment to make." Richards
said he talked with several of
his fraternity brothers and "we
decided that people might in-
terpret anything I say the wrong
way."
Was the incident prompted
by anti-Semitism, nazism, or
was it just a gag?
Since classes resumed, the
Michigan Daily has carried front
page stories • about renewed ef-
forts on campus to remove bias
clauses and integrate frater-
nities. Richards was quoted
in the Oct. 6 Michigan Daily as
saying: "Sigma Alpha Epsilon
pledged a Jewish boy last year.
His father forced him, to de-
pledge."
Whatever the reason, it is
strange that the fraternity is
making no attempt to explain
its action.

HOUSTON, Tex. — Speaking
at the Hadassah - convention
here, Dr. J. Coert Rylaarsdam,
professor of theology at the
divinity school of the University
of Chicago, said the U.S. ap-
peasement of the Arab world
is "a loss of faith in itself." He
called on the United States "to
announce in ringing tones that
the days of bargaining are over,
that Israel is here to stay."
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, presi-
dent of the World Zionist Or-
ganization, emphasized that the
"big powers," including the
Soviet Union, must give "top
priority" to the initiation of a
"serious and determined peace
effort" in the Middle East. The

alternative, he said, is "disaster
for the Middle East—a catas-
trophe for the world."
Acceptance of Israel by Arab
states as an equal member in
the Middle East's family of
nations would enable Israel to
make available its "tremendous
technological knowledge" to-
ward the "evolutki. of a new
Middle Eastern society," Dr.
Goldmann said.
Mrs. Samuel W. Halpin,
of the Jewish Agency,
said that while Israel is not
central in the Suez controversy
it had become "the symbol of.
the discrimination which the
whole world now fears."
Mrs. Herman Shulman, presi-
dent of Hadassah, said the Zion-
ist movement's primary task is
the development of a closer
friendship "and a sense of iden-
tification between the people of
this country and the people of
Israel."
e Moshe Kol, world chairman
of Youth Aliyah's Committee, of
Jerusalem, reported to the con-
vention that one of Israel's ma-
jor problems is interesting youth
in farming. The country's rocky
terrain and difficult irrigation
problems are stumbling blocks
to farming, he said, and youth
is called upon to help overcome
difficulties in establishing a
sound esconomy.
Dr. Kalman J. Mann, director
general of Hadassah's medical
organization, proposed the cre-
ation of a Middle East Board
of Health to be "sponsored and
supervised by the United Na-
tions and staffed by Arabs and
Jews."

When Mayor Cobo took office in January, 1950, he inaugurated his
Revenue Bond Program and won approval for it at Washington and
Lansing. Thus he cut in,half the time that would have been required
to complete the two great expressways of the State. He also accelerated
land acquisition for parks and recreation centers. He launched the
Detroit Civic Center. He added 190,000,000 gallons a day to the water
supply system which now serves 41 communities in addition to Detroit.
He did not increase Detroit faith and credit bond debt. He won the
fight for adequate natural gas supply for Detroit and Michigan.,
