issuance of a building permit to
the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion-
sponsored American School of
Archeology.
The religious leaders based
their fight' on the fact that
Reform services are to be held
in the school library. The city's
Municipal Council has been run
by a Mapai-Religious Bloc co-
alition until • the school fight,
but that broke down when the
building permit was voted.
The two new deputy mayors
are Dr. P. Jacoby, a Progres-
sive, and Rahamin Kalentar, a
former member of Hapoel
Hamizrachi who broke with his
fellow members of the religious
group to support Mayor Gershon
Agron, of Mapai, in . his stand.
They will replace Moshe
Gewirtzman, of Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi, - 'who resigned, and Rabbi
Moshe Porush, Agudist, who
was unseated by a margin of
11 votes in a showdown with
Mayor Agron.
The new coalition has the
support of 11 of the 21 mem-
bers of the Council: Mapai, 6;
Progressives, 2; Achdut Avodah
and WIZO, 1 each; and Kalen-
tar.
At the same time, the Re-
ligious Bloc moved to discipline
Kalentar by announcing he no
longer represents Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi on whose list he was
elected to the Council.
Later, the Council acted to
replace temporarily Mr. Agron
who will leave shortly for the
U.S. to participate in the Israel
Bond Drive. In • his absence,
Deputy Mayor Ish-Shalom, of
Mapai, will be Acting Mayor.
