`White Council' Hears Jew-Baiting Admiral

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (JTA)
—An attempt to arouse anti-
Jewish sentiment in the South
by Charging that the Jews are
responsible for the fight to end
segregation was made by a re-
tired admiral in an inflamma-
tory speech before a White Citi-
zens Council rally.
The speaker, John G. Crom-
melin, who retired from the
Navy as a Rear Admiral in
1949 after a public reprimand,
told the roaring crowd that the
anti-segregation fight was
sparked by (Justice) "Felix
Frankfurter, a Jew, Arthur
"Spanger, a Zionist Jew, and Sen.
Herbert Lehman, a Marxist
Jew." The speaker did not iden-
tify "Spanger" further.

Suggests Minimum Cultural
Program for Year 5717
Editor, The Jewish News:
In order that we keep our-
selves in tune with some of the
needs of our people, I suggest
the following minimum pro-
gram of cultural activities for
the Detroit Jewish community
for 5717.
Since 1951, I have been urging
the formation of a Bureau of
Jewish Education. I have de-
voted a chapter to this problem
in my work "Jewish Communal
Institutions in Detroit." I think
that the year 5717 should see
the fulfillment of this proposal.
Also since 1951, I have been
urging the establishment of _a
Jewish Historical Society for
the purpose of recording and
interpreting Jewish life in De-
troit. The new year should see
the realization. of such a vital
organization.
I urge that the archives be
activated on the pattern of the
Jewish Scientific Institute and
the Archives of the Hebrew
Union College.

mess?" Crommelin shouted at
his audience of 300.

clause in the_ Alabama constitu-

fast frontier of the real Anglo-
Saxon race—and if I am wrong,
my name's Finkelstein."

Ask Religious Freedom for Jews in Transylvania

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
New York delegation of the
United American Jews of Tran-
sylvania appealed to the Ro-
manian Legation to restore re-
ligious freedom to the Orthodox
Jews of Transylvania, Romania.

tion said that it is estimated
about 70,000 Jews still reside in
Transylvania.

veu Burcam during a two-hour
meeting, the delegation urged
the Romanian government to
restore the Sabbath holiday,
permit Talmudic students to
study abroad, allow the import
of religious articles into the
counrty, permit Transylvania
Jews to emigrate to countries
of their choice, and, reopen cul-
tural communications between

It's Smart to Save
Where It's MORE Profitable!

.

AU of us try to get the best value for every dollar we spend. Why

not apply the same wisdom to the money we save? An account

at American Savings earns 2 1 /2 per cent, a higher-than-average

rate—makes savings easier to keep intact—less tempting to

withdraw. Remember, too, at American Savings, funds received

by the 10th, earn from the 1st of the month. Naturally it's smart

to "Save the American Way"—because it's more more profitable.

Boris Dimondstein's
Poems and Drawings

Boris Dimondstein is the rare
combination of poet and artist.
His latest collection of verses,
"Leaves From My Album,"
published by Literarishe Heftn
Publishing, Tujunga, Calif., is
an expression of his poetic feel-
ings and contains two of his
paintings — one a nude, "In
Trance of Love."
One of his verses reads:

"The plagiarist never a poem
creates.
But stealthily 'borrows' from
others instead.
'A wolf in the skin of a lamb,'
A hLtepte,
fatte n s upon
upon the true poet's
hot sweat."
