Friday, August 17, 1956—THE D ETROIT .JEWISH NEW S - 10
Prison Inmates Visited by Sherka
Rabbi Joshua Sperka, since
.1941 the official chaplain to
Jewish prisoners in Michigan
state prisons, returned this week
from a pre-holiday visit to the
State Prison at Marquette.
- Although he holds weekly
services for inmates at Jack-
son's State Prison of Southern
Michigan, Rabbi Sperka visits
Marquette only before major
holidays to arrange with in-
mates and prison officials for
services.
During these visits Rabbi
Sperka also tries to help the
men through guidance in prison
or personal problems. He also
aids in parole and the rehabili-
tation of prisoners after their
release.
Rabbi Sperka reports that
there are only seven Jewish in-
mates at Marquette, out of an
inmate population of 1,200. At
Jackson, where there are 6,000
prisoners, • there are 40 Jews,
and at Ionia, with 1,000 inmates,
there are only two -Jews. In the
women's division of the latter
prison, there is one Jewish in-
mate out of 300..
