Friday, August 17, 1956—THE D ETROIT .JEWISH NEW S - 10 Prison Inmates Visited by Sherka Rabbi Joshua Sperka, since .1941 the official chaplain to Jewish prisoners in Michigan state prisons, returned this week from a pre-holiday visit to the State Prison at Marquette. - Although he holds weekly services for inmates at Jack- son's State Prison of Southern Michigan, Rabbi Sperka visits Marquette only before major holidays to arrange with in- mates and prison officials for services. During these visits Rabbi Sperka also tries to help the men through guidance in prison or personal problems. He also aids in parole and the rehabili- tation of prisoners after their release. Rabbi Sperka reports that there are only seven Jewish in- mates at Marquette, out of an inmate population of 1,200. At Jackson, where there are 6,000 prisoners, • there are 40 Jews, and at Ionia, with 1,000 inmates, there are only two -Jews. In the women's division of the latter prison, there is one Jewish in- mate out of 300.. Woloks. Open New N. Northwest Israel Sets High Holiday Services Bloomfield Students Enjoy Trip on SS Zion A group of non-Jewish high school students from Bloomfield High School, Bloonfifield, Mich., recently had a wonderful exper- ience aboard the Israeli liner Zion, jildging from a letter sent by a group leader back home. The students, enjoying a trip from New York to Naples, told of "the beautiful ship . . . be- ing treated like kings and queens. . . respecting the cus- toms of the Jewish sabbath and for this being respected." The letter also told of trips throughout the ship, the learning of a Jewish folk song and dances and the excellent food and or- chestra.
