Alexander Halpern Dies

LONDON, (JTA)—Alexander
Halpern, leader of the World
ORT Union, former legal ad-
viser to the British Embassy
in Czarist Russia, died here at
the age of 77. During the Ke-
rensky revolution, he was Gen-
eral Secretary of the Russian

the British Government Misr
sion to the United States.

A symbol of the miseries North African Jews have endured
for centuries, the barefoot boy in the upper picture squats in
the "shop" of an artisan to whom he is "apprenticed". They
are today's emergency. Whether they migrate to Israel or
remain, they cannot continue in the ways of the past. More
and more mellah youth are being raised to a modern way of
life at the ORT schools, like the students in the lower picture
in a machine shop at one of _the ORT vocational schools in
Casablanca. ORT programs in North Africa are supported by
the JDC, a member agency of the UJA.

MICHIGAN'

DENVER, (JTA) — Colorado
Attorney General Duke Dunbar
has ruled against the distribu-
tion of Gideon Bibles in the
public schools of this state.
The Gideon Bibles have been
distributed in the schools of
Colorado Springs and Engle-
wood. Action by Duribar fol-
lowed similar rulings by the at-
torneys general of a number of
other states.
The distribution of Gideon
Bibles had not been widespread
in ma j or cities, where school
superintendents have generally
been alert to the poSsibility of
such action being interpreted as
a violation of the principle of
separation of church and state.
But in smaller towns the dis-
tribution of Gideon Bibles has
been considerably more wide-
spread.
