New-Israel Pump
Called 'Success' -

HAIFA, (JTA)—Construction
of a centripetal pump is the
first achievement of a research
project sponsored at the Israel
Institute of Technology here by
the'United States Air Force.
Building- of the pump is con-
sidered a great scientific devel-
opment. Scientists expect the
pump, developed under the di-
rection of Prof. Marcus Riener,
head of the electrical laborato-
ries at the TechniOn, to have a
revolutionary effect in aeronau-
tical engineering and is believed
to have possibilities in the field
of guided missiles.
The new pump; which is all
metal, will be used as a corn-
pressor. It is designed to in-
crease its efficiency as the dens-
ity of the atmosphere decreases,
thus making it most useful in
the upper atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Air
Force has extended its contract
with the Technion for another
year in order to test the pump
at various pressures and tem-
peratures.

„Herz! Foundation
Publishes Halpern's
'The American Jew'

The Theodor Herzl Founda-
tion, 250 W. 57th St., New York,
has published "The American
Jew," a Zionist analysis of
American Jewry by Dr. Ben
Halpern.
Dr. Halpern, an author, editor
and sociologist, is presently.re-
search associate • in Israel
Studies at Harvard University.
His book inquires into the
meaning of Jewish exile and of
America as a melting pot on the
one hand and a cultural plural-
ity on the other. It seeks to dis-
pel what the author regards as
the myths arising from both of
these concepts. Dr. Halpern also
discusses the position of the
Jews as a minority in a Judeo-
Christian civilization and the
meaning of the State of Israel in
Jewish life. In the preface to
his bogk, Dr. Halpern writes:
"The views expressed here
represent no attitude officially
approved by any Zionist or any
other Jewish organization . .
The position taken would per-
haps be shared in certain re-
spects by some American Jews,
particularly no doubt, among
Zionists, but not only ... would
such persons correspond to no
existing organized body—they
would also amount to a very
distinct minority in any Ameri-
can Jewish or Zionist organiz-
ation."

DeMille Hopes for Israeli-Egyptian Israel to Broaden
Accord by 'The Ten Commandments' Nuclear Research

By HERBERT G. LUFT

HOLLYWOOD — In a recent
JTA column discussing the soon
to be released movie, "The Ten
Commandments," I voiced re-
gret that Cecil B. DeMille, dur-
ing his extensive location pe-
riod, used Arabs to portray the
Hebrews of old. Now Al Fine-
stone, who heads DeMille's
News • Bureau at Paramount,
tells me - that actually a good
many Jews were employed in
the Exodus sequence, during.
filming of mass scenes abroad
as well as in the subsequent tie-
in shots photographed in the
Hollywood studios.
Finestone says that DeMille's
prime reason for going to Egypt
was his sense of realism. He
was determined to show on the
screen the actual path taken by
Moses and the Children of Israel
—from the Biblical land of Go-
shen across the desert wilder-
ness and the Red Sea to the
very top of Mount Sinai.

To us, DeMille's simple be-
