By DANIEL L. TICKTGN
This is a story of the summer
of MN:
During the 19th century Tisha
B'ab was observed as rigidly a
fast day as Yom Kippur. For,
who was not orthodox then?
The need for reform Judaism
was not, as yet, too strongly
felt.
Not only was food and drink
denied the pious for twenty-
four hours on Tisha B'ab, but
also some of the other comforts
as well. On this, the anniver-
sary of the destruction of each
of our temples, the people sat
in candle and kerosene - lit
shuls, on overturned benches,
wearing slippers or sandals in-
stead of shoes. At night, some
would sleep on the floor, some
on wooden boards, and some
would feel that they were suf-
fering enough anguish by deny-
ing themselves the comfort of
a pillow for the night. From
sundown to sundown, there was
mourning for the fallen temples
and the lost homeland.
It is only 67 years since
my story took place, 67 years
out of 2,000 since the Second
Temple was destroyed.
On Tisha b'Ab ever y o ne
fasted, the young and the very

old. They fasted, not because
they had to, but because they
wanted to. There was even,
among the teen-agers, a "Chav-
rei Tzohm," a fasting fraternity,
so to speak. To be a •member
in good standing, one :had to
fast the full 24 hours—and no
cheating allowed.
That year was a bad time all
over Europe. A scare; a disease
like polio, was crippling and
Idling people. Mostly the wo-
men and children were effected.
In old Machzorim there is a
special prayer for this sickness,
"El naw, refaw, naw, tachlauy
gefen priaw." The disease was
that serious.
On Tisha b'Ab morning, afte*
we had fasted for 12 hours, we
noticed that the rabbi, Reb Vel-
vill, was perplexed by some-
thing. When Reb Velvill had a
problem, it meant we all had a
problem.
The Rebbe pored over his
Sforim anxiously, and when he
reached a decision he called for
attention.
"You all know that the Torah
was given as a life-source for
Jews. 'V'chai Bohen,' live with
them (the Mitzvos). King David
in Psalms 119 recognizes the
need of understanding the laws
—`11abineni V'echye,' . give me
to understand so that I ,may live.
Therefore, as rabbi, I say that
for the sake of the children, we
shall fast no more today. We
cannot endanger lives because
of our stubborn determination
to fast. For if someone dies
from the disease because he did
not eat, he will never again be
able to fast. So I am sacrificing
this year's fast for all the fasts
that you will keep during your
lifetime."
He called to the Shamos to
move ahead the clock as a ges-
ture of what he was doing. The
Shamos did as he told, and the
clock counted out the hours,
striking them one after another
until the face of the clock said,
"It is now evening. Stop your
fast."
Reb Velvill said, "I am your
rabbi. I am telling you—eat.
Let us davven Mincha now, and
there are hard-boiled eggs and
rolls downstairs. I will be the
first. Follow your rabbi.
"We will now davven Mincha,
and tben we will go down-
stairs!"
Reb Velvill started to davven
Mincha. And then—no one hesi-
tated; no one lingered, they had
a leader to follow.
We davvened the afternoon
prayer in the morning, followed
the rabbi downstairs, washed
our hands, made the necessarjr
prayers and ate. Reb Velvill led
the grace after we ate. When we
were finished, we went home.
Always afterwards, I remem-
bered that it is better, and
sometimes harder, to live for
something then to die for it.
