politics" with U.S. foreign
policy at a cabinet meeting on
Nov. 12, 1953, it was revealed
in the publication of "Eisen-
hower—The Inside Story," an
authoritative book drawn from
minutes of cabinet meetings.
The book, by New York
Herald Tribune reporter Robert
J. Donovan, depicted the Presi-
dent as accusing the Truman_
administration of using foreign
policy "for domestic political
advantage."
A description of the cabinet
meeting was given as follows:
"Dulles gave review of Eric
A. Johnston's mission to the
Near East to pacify the Arabs
and Israelis and, as a step in
that direction to promote a
project similar to the Tennessee
Valley Authority on the Jordan
River for the benefit of both
sides.
"After Dulles had spoken, the
President said that since foreign
policy so often involves domes-
tic policy as well, he was eager
to have the cabinet talk about
it.
"The best ?policy at home, he
(the President) said, was to do
the right thing abroad even
though this might temporarily
alienate extremists in the United
States. He cautioned the Cab-
inet against 'playing politics'
with foreign affairs.
"Obviously referring to Is-_
rael, which Dulles had just
mentioned, the President said
he had been told of one case
in which the Truman Adminis-
tration had used foreign policy
for domestic political advan-
tage."

Report Recruiting of Druze Youth
`Above Expectations' in Israel

JERUSALEM ( J TA ) — The
recruiting of Druze youths into
the Israel Army has succeeded
beyond expectations, it was re-
ported in the Jerusalem Post.
The response was so great,
according to an article by
Gideon Weigert, that it caused
the army financial and man-
power problems before all the
Druze recruits could- be ab-
sorbed into the minority unit.
The article said that it was
believed that the Israel Supreme
Court's rejection of an appeal
by two Druze conscripts had
convinces. the Druze corn-.
munity that the Israel govern-
ment intended to enforce
con-

scription.
