Jewish Services
Held on Formosa
For First Time

TAIPEI, Formosa — Jewish
religious services were held on
the island of Formosa last
month for the first time thanks
to the resourcefulness of Chap-
lain Walter Jacob. -
From his station at Clark Air
Base in the Philippines, Chap-
lain Jacob now flies into Taipei
once a month to conduct serv-
ices for American Jewish mili-
tary and civilian personnel and
their families. In this latest ex-
tention of the National Jewish
Welfare Board's world - wide
program of religious and wel-
fare services for military per-
sonnel and their dependents,
Chaplain Jacob discovered that
the services he launched in May
were the first ever held in this
hot center of the cold war.
In addition to conducting
services on his monthly visits,
he drops off a variety of cul-
tural and religious literature
and supplies furnished by JWB,
trains pinch-hitters to conduct
a modest program of Jewish
education for the youngsters
and brings a touch of home to
the isolated men and their fam-
ilies.
Each time Chaplain Jacob
arrives in Formosa his "con-
gregation" oonsists of all Jews
on Formosa and their families.
Many of the participants in the
services travel tremendous dis-
tances under difficult circum-
stances to get to the service.

Ford Foundation to Study
Israel's Human Resources
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Ford Foundation is considering
making further grants to com-
plete a program of study of the
human and natural resources of
the State of Israel, it was re-
vealed with the release of the
Foundation's annual report for
1955.
The report noted that since
1953 when the Foundation
granted funds to the Israel
Foundation's Trustees to make
possible research on more than
two dozen resource questions by
social and natural scientists, the
Ford Foundation has been help-
ing Israel.

More important than what you say is
how you say it. Expressions of sym-
pathy, best wishes or congratulations
are much more effective with a gift
basket that speaks for you.
