Hank's Success

By BILL WOLF

(Copyright, 1956, JTA, Inc.)

Hank Greenberg, general
manager of the Cleveland In-
dians, now has an 11 percent
financial interest in the Cleve-
land club.
This makes Hank the fourth
largest shareholder in the
Cleveland team, and it makes
Hank the first prominent Jewish
athlete to achieve such a status
in the major leagues.
While there have been Jewish
baseball players of stature peri-
odically throughout the history
of the game, they have not pre-
Viously worked into positions of
ownership.

Cranberry Sauce in a

The Essenes

--

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1956.
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

The Essenes composed one of
three major sects in Jewish life
during the time of the develop-
ment of the Talmud. Their -his-
tory began in the time of the
Hasmoneans. And it is claimed
that their origin comes from the
"Chassidim" who fought against
the Graeco-Syrians under the
banner of Judah Maccabee. The
Essenes became known for their
extreme. piety and separation
from the physical pleasures of
life. They strived to avoid any
kind of impurity for the body.
Many refrained from marrying.
They avoided meat and wine.
Because of such extreme prac-
tices they became extinct and
even today little is known a-bout
them. save from the Writings of
Josephus and one or tvTo other
historians. Their significance is
coming to light in recent years
since some scholars claim that
the Dead Sea Scrolls describe
their sect.
The meaning of this name is
not altogether clear. Josephus
apparently gave them this name.
Some writers claim that the
name means "mod. ,t." Others
claim. that it means "shy." Some
even claim that the name means
"healers" because the Essenes
devoted themselves to healing
