The Rebbe and the Rebetsin
U.S. Told of Delivery of
2 USSR Warships to Egy
By LAMED SHAPIRO
WASHINGTON (JTA)—Two
Soviet-built Skori class destroy-
ers are at sea on their way to
Alexandria, U.'S. officials were
informed here. The two de-
stroyers, built in 1950 are being
delivered to the Egyptian Navy.
The transaction is part of the
Communist-Egyptian arms deal.
Naval authorities identify the
Skori Class destroyers as a fast
minelaying type of 2,200 tons
displacement. It is especially
suited to blockade operations.
The destroyers have four 5 inch
guns, torpedo tubes, and anti-
aircraft batteries. The ships
were reported in the Mediter-
ranean and are - expected to
dock in Alexandria before the
end of this week. They came
from the Baltic Sea via the Eng-
lish Channel.
(In London, it was reported
that four submarines have been
acquired by Egypt under an
agreement with Poland. The re-
port said that the four craft are
expected at Alexandria from
Gdynia, home port of the Polish
Navy. The submarines, de-
scribed as old models, will be
used to intensify the Arab
blockade of Israel, the London
press said.)

Once upon a time there were
a:I-ebbe and a rebetsin. .
When the rebbe studied Torah
the rebetsin would say she
heard angels chanting, and when
the rebetsin cooked fish for
the Sabbath the rebbe was cer-
tain that he smelled the odors
of Paradise. Both the rebbe and
the rebetsin were equally
good, pious, and wise. If there
ever was a difference between
them, it was that the rebetsin
could almost issue rabbinical
judgments, while on the subject
of cooking fish the rebbe
claimed no knowledge.
God had closed the womb of
the rebetsin. The rebbe would
sit in one corner, the rebetsin
in another, and they . would
plead to God in silence:
Creator of the Universe, heed
the prayer of your servant and
blesg me with a son, so that I
may teach him your Torah and
good deeds . . .
Creator of the Universe, Lord
of the World, hearken to the
prayer of your servant and re-
joice me with a child, so that
I may plant good ways - in him
and teach him to do your
will .
And the rebbe would sit
down by the side of the rebetsin
and say, "When our son begins
to talk, I will myself teach him
liow to read and the meaning
of the words."
And the rebetsin would add,

At the recent TOPEX stamp
show your columnist lectured
on "The History of Israel as
Seen on Its Stamps." After the
lecture, Eric Lind, a reader of
The Jewish News and a avid
collector of Israeli stamps, intro-
duced himself. He wondered
why there was no group of De-
troit collectors organized around
an interest in Israeli stamps
and related philatelic matters.
A suggestion was made that the
"JeWish News Stamp Collector"
aid in establishing such a group.
So, if you have any comments
on this subject. drop us a line.
Collectors of Israel stamps
should be familiar with "The
Holy Land Philatelist", Israel's
Stamp Monthly. This English
language publication is edited
by F. W. Pollack and is printed
in Tel Aviv. Those seriously
concerned with Israeli postal is-
sues :nd postal history will find
"The Holy Land Philatelist" a
valuable aid..
A feature of the magazine is
a column called "Jews Honored
on Stamps." Recent issues tell
about the Heinrich Heine
stamps of Germany, the prophet
Elias as shown on a stamp of
the Vatican City and Emanuel
Masker, Jewish chess enthusi-
ast cited on a Cuban stamp.
"The Holy Land Philatelist"
illustrates commemorative post
marks of Israel and from time
to time has an ,English-Hebrew
"Glossary of Philatelic Terms."
The "Jewish News Stamp Col-
lector" will be pleased to ar-
range for its readers to receive
a sample copy of the magazine;
as mentioned. above, "drop us a

"When our Kaddish awakens I
will say morning prayers with
him, and before he goes to
sleep evening prayer's."
And so the years flew by, and
the townspeople began to whis-
per among themselves, "If a
woman has no children after
10 years of marriage, the hus-
band must not live with her."
And this was, told to the
rebbe, and the Yebbe answered,
"I will not send my wife away,
and God will yet give me a
son."
The townspeople grUmbled
and thought of removing the
rebbe, but later they decided
that if the barrenness of his
wife didn't trouble him, it cer-
tainly should not trouble them
—and so the years went. The
rebbe sat opposite the rebetsin
and they talked.
"When our child grows up, I
will teach him the Gemarah
and all the commentaries."
"When our son will come Fri-
days from the bath I will honor
him with fresh fish, and when
he returns from the synagogue
on the Sabbath I will meet hint
with the sacramental wine."
And a while later the towns-
people again remembered them
and gave them advice. "Adopt
a child and bring it up, and a
hundred years from now it will
say Kaddish for you."
The two of them shook their
heads. The rebbe answered,
"How can I instruct a strange
child in Torah and good deeds
if I am not responsible for his
sins? And the rebetsin said,
"How will I be able to love a
strange child if he has not cost
me my blood?"
And both of them added; "No,
God will bless us with our own
child!"
The townspeople grumbled,
called them stubborn, and in
time forgot 'them once mire.
And the two old people de-
cided: When our treasure grows
up he will issue rabbinical judg-
ments and write holy books .. .
When our joy reaches eighteen,
we will lead him to the wedding
canopy . . .
One after the other, in the
flow of eternity, the years
passed by. On a morning they
were founddead. They were
sitting on their beds, facing each
other, in the same nightshirts,
clasping their hands, like chil-
dren, around their knees. Across
their faces slitted a smile. And
in the air of the old house, as
though the words still hummed:
When our son will grow
up...
When our Kaddish will grow
older...

Bonds Aid Arts-Crafts Industry
Proceeds from the sale of Israel Bonds are being utilized
to develop and expand Israel's arts and crafts industry. With
Israel Bond aid, this industry has in the past five years become
one of Israel's leading exporters, meeting the growing demand
abroad for Israeli-made products. As a result, Israeli artists
and designers are becoming renowned throughout the world.

plastic art objects, a good portion of which are sold in
America.

French Cabinet Decides
To Embargo Only Light
Arms to Middle East
PARIS (JTA) — The French
Cabinet has decided to embargo
all shipments of light arms to
the Middle East. The action
came after a report by Foreign
Minister Christian Pineau.
It was uncertain here whether
this, embargo would pertain to
Israel. The chief reason for the
ban was that light arms shipped
to various Arab states had
turned up in the hands- of na-
tionalists "fighting the French in
Algeria and elsewhere in. North
Africa.
