a story.
Back in 1909, a group of

This first modern cultural center in Ramleh, Israel, a town
of 20,000 immigrants, recently was opened by Histadrut. It was
built in honor of Morris L. Schaver, prominent community
leader, and was sponsored by the Detroit Histadrut Campaign.
Mr. and Mrs. Schaver are sailing for Israel today and will
be guests at additional dedication ceremonies at the Center,
in July.
While in Israel, the Schaver's will make final arrange-
ments for the establishment of the recreational hail at Kibutz
Schiller and a playground on JNF land in Jerusalem. These are
gifts made in honor of the Bar Mitzvah of the Schavers' son,
Itzhak, six weeks ago.
Mrs. Schaver will appear at concerts in Israel and in the
Scandinavian countries on their present overseas trip.
Itzhak Schaver is spending the summer at Camp Masad,
in Pennsylvania.

Zionists purchased one hundred
dunams or so of sand dunes,
near Jaffa, to set up a new
garden city. What were they
to call thg new town? At the
time, Sokolow had just pub-
lished a book. It really wasn't
his own book—Sokolow was the
IAL GORDON, or as we all author of many books—but this
know him, Hy Goldman, is the latest was a translation into
new music director of WXYZ, Hebrew of a German book.

"Let's call it by the name of
Sokolow's book," someone sug-
gested. The idea found favor
and that's how Tel Aviv got
its name.
The book which Sokolow had
translated from the German was
Theodor Herzl's "Alt-neuland"
(Old New Land). Sokolow had
taken • some poetic liberties in
the translation of the title into
Hebrew. For of old he substi- •
tuted "Tel" or "Hill." What are
older than the hills? And for
"New" he substituted "Aviv"
or 'Spring." What is as young
and as new as Spring? So Tel
Aviv or Hill of Spring came
into being.
And that's how a book turned
into a city._

Statistics just published reveal
that Israel is a very healthy
place to live. In 1955, the mor-
tality in Israel was 6.42 per
1,000 population. In the United
States, 9.6 per thousand, in
Great Britain, 12.11 per thou-
sand. The only country with a
lower mortality than Israel was
Panama.
Most striking thing about the
Israel record is the almost com-
plete absence of cancer and
heart disease among the Yeme-
nite Jews of Israel. Studies are
being made in the hope of ex-
plaining this phenomenon.
