State Rules Against Disc riminating Resort

Thomas M. Kavanagh, Attor-
ney General of Michigan, has
ruled that when a resort utilizes
discriminatory language, the
Michigan Tourist Council should
not distribute such advertising
nor extend the facilities of its
office to that advertiser.
This opinion was handed
down in response to a request
from Robert J. Furlong, execu-
tive secretary of the Michigan
Tourist Council, and related to
a calendar distributed by . J. J
Bachunas of Tabor Farms,
which contains the sentence,
"For 63 years, we have served
a Gentile clientele." Mr. Fur-
long made the request after
conferences with Julius Reznik,
chairman of the Michigan re-
gional advisory board of the
Anti - Defamation League of
Bnai Brith. In the opinion, it
was pointed out that phrase-
ology such as "restricted,"
"restricted clientele," "selected
clientele," or similar terms are
also in violation of the law.
The ADL office and the Jew-
ish Community Council have
expressed concern about this
matter for some time. Michigan
ADL, under the direction of
Dr. Morton J. Sobel, has
