Stamp collectors interested in
the stamps of Israel and Pales-
tine have two fine organizations
to which they can belong, The
Israel-Palestine Philatelic Soci-
ety of America and the Society
of Israel Philatelists, both
active groups. For information
about these societies, readers
are invited to write to The Jew-

ish News.
During the little over 100
years that "Eretz Yisrael" has
been under Turkish, British and
Israeli rule, the. stamps of many
countries have been used in this
small land. In the 1850s Austria
operated her own post office
and postal service from Jerus-
alem. Other countries which
also followed this practice (with
Ottoman - Turkish permission)
were Russia, Germany, France,
England and Great Britain.
With the British invasion of
Palestine in 1914 and the subse-
quent establishment of the
British Mandate, regular Pales-
tinian stamps under British su-
pervision were issued. Since
1948, the stamps of the State
of Israel have been used within
the Israeli postal system.
The following items were ad-
vertised in a recent issue of a;
leading stamp journal: "Jewish
War Prisoners in Indian Intern-
ment Camps, 1942-1945, Group
of 5 different censored covers
(i.e., postally used envelopes)
addressed to the Jewish Relief
Association, Bombay, India."
The price for these unusual, if
not rare, covers was given as
$25.

Turkey Starts Egypt
'Get Tough' Drive

ISTANBUL, (JTA)
T h e
Turkish government embarked
on a"get tough with Egypt"
campaign while three promi-
nent Turkish newspapermen,
just back from Israel, started a
series of articles in their news-
papers praising what they saw
in the Jewish State,
The campaign against Egypt
was launched with a broadcast
over the government-controlled
Ankara Radio charging Egypt
with creating discord in the
Middle East and with serving
Communist ends. "The Egyp-
tian leaders are behaving like
the last adherents of an impe-
rialism which is going out of
fashion," the Turkish broadcast
said.
The three Turkish journalists,
in their articles on Israel, are
unanimous in their -opinion that
Israel wants peace, is friendly
toward Turkey and is a positive
factor for progress in the Mid-
dle East.
The newspapermen — Falih
Rifki Atay of Dunya, Burhan
Felek of Cumhuriyet, and Mi-
that Perin of the Istanbul Ex-
press — compared Israel with
Turkey and suggested that this
country could learn many things
from Israel. Mr. Atay suggested
a student exchange with Israel
rather than with the United
States or European countries.
