Stamp Collector

By HENRY B. STERN

Winthrop S. Boggs,. in his
"Foundations of Philately," de-
fines "approvals" as " . . a
number, of stamps mounted in a
sheet or in a booklet which is
sent to the customer. From
these stamps he may select what
he desires and return the re-
maining stamps, together with
payment for those he kept."
This manner . of acquiring
stamps is quite common and
acceptable. Yet many beginning
collectors become confused and
disappointed with advertise-
ments featuring approval selec-
tions. The doubts of the. parents
of youthful -beginners often goes
beyond disappointment.
The collector will find ap-
proval selections a fine way to
build a stamp collection at a
moderate cost. However, there
are several points to keep in
mind . . . for the protection of
the stamp collector as well as
the dealer: •

Dr. MAURICE N. EISENDRATH, president of the Union
of America Hebrew congregations, presents the first print of 'a
new film strip on the late Dr. Stephen S. Wise to Rabbi Wise's
daughter, Judge JUSTINE WISE POLIER. One of the frames
of the strip, created by UAHC, shows Dr. Wise with his good
friend, the late Dr. Albert Einstein at one of their frequent
meetings. The filmstrip contains 40 frames. It is available by
writing 838 Fifth Ave., New York.

Samarkand Rabbi Among

New Emigres from Russia

.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Rabbi
Yechiel Maximoif, only rabbi
of Samarkand, fabled ancient
city of Soviet 'Uzbekistan, ar-
rived here as an immigrant. The
74-year-old rabbi was wearing
a traditional Bukharian robe of
multi-colored silk.
Rabbi Maximoff told news-
men that the religious life of
the Samarkand Jews had re-
mained untouched throughout,
the Communist regime. He said
that he had not only been the
community's rabbi, but also its
cantor, mohel and ritual
Slaughterer.
He arrived on a plane with
14 other Jews from the USSR.
Another passenger on the plane
was Levi Kliest, who spent the-
past 15 years in Siberia where
he had been exiled for Zionist
activities. On another flight that
arrived were Mr. and Mrs.
Zoltan Hirsh, released a few
weeks ago from a Romanian
prison.

Windsor Leader Offers Man
How to Treat Arab Infiltrator
EDITOR, The Jewish News:
As • long as _you ask your
readers a simple - question you
must not be surprised if now
and then one takes you literally
and gives you a simple. answer.
I refer to your editorial on the
suggested trek of the Arabs
from the Gaza strip to Israel.
Here is what I would do:
Meet them when they cross
the boundary with trucks. Set
up a receiving station with
nurses, doctors; . kitchens. Take
away any arms they may have.
Then as fast as they can be
loaded on to trucks, keeping
families together, first treating
the sick, I would shoot them
through Israel to the Syrian
and Jordanian borders, unload
them and let them continue
their trek. If there is going to
be any shooting let the Arabs
do it. If any of them can prove
ownership of land in Israel,
this would probably be as good
a time as any to either arrange
compensation for them or per-
mit a limited number of them
to settle in Israel on equivalent
land. -
Surely even the most pious
of our Christian .friends who
are worrying about the Arabs
for the first time in history.
could not complain of the fact
that Gandhi-like tactics were
being met by Ghandi-like tac-
tics.

Remains of 1900-Year-Old
Jewish Settlement Uncovered
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
remains of an ancient Jewish
settlement that may date back
some 1,900 years has been un-
covered ten miles south of Mas-
sada, close to the western shore
of the lower portion of the Dead
Sea, it was announced here.
Remnants of buildings,' some
fences and irrigation ditches
were uncovered by personnel
on 'a survey for the Ministry of
Development. It is believed
that the residents of the area
may have brought their water
from the vicinity of Ein Gedi,
which is nearly 20 miles to the
north. The architecture of the
buildings . is believed similar to

Canadian Intermarriage Triples in Last 30 Years

MONTREAL, (JTA) — The
rate of intermarriage between
Jews and non-Jews in Canada
as a whole has tripled during
the past 30 years, it was re-
ported by the research bureau
of the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress.
The research bureau disclosed
the same. ratio holds "for the
provinces of Ontario, Saskatche-
wan and Manitoba during these
three decades, but only doubled
in the provinces of Alberta and
Quebec. In Nova Scotia and
British Columbia interinar-
riages have increased by ap-
proximately 50 percent, and in
New Brunswick it fell off by
almost half in the .same period.

hundred new immigrants ar-
rived in Israel May 13 aboard

1. _ Do not send for approval selec-
tions unless you seriously intend to
buy something.
2. Read the advertisements for
"Free Offer of Stamps" or "Special
Premiums." Quite frequently such
an advertisement. mentions that ap-
proval selections will be sent with
the free offer.
3. Younger collectors should look
over approval selections they receive
on the same day that the mailman
delivers the stamps. It is not wise
for anyone to leave stamps (especi-
ally someone else's) lying about.
4. If you buy stamps frequently
through the approval method, let the
dealer know what kind of stamps
_you are most interested in. This
will save time and effort for all con-
cerned.
-
5. If unsolicited approvals are sent
to you, do not feel obl i gated to pur-
chase any.
