Educator to Address UHS Meetings;
Begin. Fall Term 'Registration
• Dr. Milton R. Konvitz, prom-
inent educator, author and pro-
fessor of industrial labor rela-
tions at Cornell University, will
. be guest speaker at the 36th an-
n.ual meeting of the United He-
b-ew Schools.
The program is arranged for
8:15 p.m., May 28, in the Esther
Berman Branch, 18977 Schaefer.
Dr. Konvitz will speak
"The Destiny of Jewish Eduta-
tion in America." Preceding his
address, there will be the an-
nual report of the Schools, an
educational report and election
of offiters. -

A musical program will be
highlighted with several rendi-
tions by the Children's Choir of
the Schools.
This week, officials of the
Schools opened registration for
the fall semester in all of its
branches. They emphasized
that now is the best time to
plan on enrolling youngsters
for the fall.
During the past six years, a
steady growth in the enrollment
of the Schools has often de-
layed a pupil's start in classes
for a half year. Facilities and
teaching staffs are limited.
A school • spokesman urged
parents to remember the four-
_ year minimum 'training required
as a prerequisite to Bar Mi#-
vah. Children, ' now eight or
nine, should be enrolled. There

The Great Lakes Regional
Conference of the National Fed-

meeting at an all-day program
recently at Adas Shalom Syna-
goguef elected Ben Weiss as
president.

Michigan, the southern part of
Ontario and the western part

$75,000,000 Loan
Asked by Israel
The U. S. Export - Import
Bank was asked for a $75,000,-
000 long-term loan by Israel,
this week, to develop irrigation
underground water resources.
Undersecretary of State Her-
bert Hoover Jr. was told by
Israel's Ambassador Abba Eban
that the loan was asked to in-
crease ground water supplies,
to divert the Yarkon River's
flow and to make greater use
of the summer flow of the Jor-
dan River.
Judge Kaufman to Talk Morgenthau Chapter
To Install Officers
To Mumford Parents
Judge Nathan J. Kaufman will
install new officers and speak
at the final meeting of the sea-
son " of the Mumford Parents
Club at 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, in
the school auditorium.
His topic, "A Judge Looks at
Youth," will explain some of
the problems facing young peo-
ple today, as he deals with them
in Juvenile Court. He also will
explain what parents can do to
help them.
Officers to be installed are
Mrs. Albert Goodman, preSi-
dent; Zeldon Cohen, vice-pres-
ident; Mrs. John Sturman, and
Mrs. Meyer Teitelbaum, secre-
taries; and Arthur Schultz,
treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lalesin,
MPC chairmen of the senior
trip committee, left on Thursday
with 450 Mumford seniors for
Washington, D.C. They will re-
turn on Monday.

Starting this September, the
Oak Park Branch will meet in
the new UHS-Jewish Commu-
nity Center Bldg., now being
constructed on 10 Mile, between
Coolidge and Greenfield.
A nursery school also will be
conducted in the new building.
Enrollment is being limited to
25, and will operate on a first-
come, first-served basis.
The other nursery school, lo-
cated at the Berman branch, is
limited to 50 children. Both
nurseries are state accredited
and transportation is available.
Children from 3 to 4 1/2 may be
registered.
Registration for the Sholem
Aleichem Institut!, now an af-
filiate of the Schools, is also
being taken.
Transportation may be ar-
ranged for any branch. The
UHS fleet now consists of 13
buses and three station wagons.

Israel's Kishon Company
Increases Chemical Exports
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — The ex-
port chemicals by the Kishon
Company, a subsidiary of the
Pales tine Economic Corpora-
tion, reached 2,000,000 Israel
pounds last year, it was re-
vealed by Julius Simon, chair-
man of the PEC administrative
board.
PEC is now preparing to
establish a new company for
construction development, with
$1,000,000 in capital.

Michael Swirsky, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Abel Swirsky, of Ilene
Ave., will represent Detroit in
the national spelling bee in
Washington, D. C., after win-
ning the 1956 metropolitan area
championship. -
The 13-year-old, eighth grade
student at Shulze School, won
on the word "chassis."
The word had been missed by
Beverly Stein, a 12-year-old
seventh grader at Parkman
School. She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Stein, of
8624 Whitcomb.
Besides the trip to Washing-
ton, Michael won the Jane
Thurston Trophy, which will be
presented to his school, a gold
