Weizman,n Prize Won by Israeli

Dr. Markus Reiner, professor
of civil engineering and head
of the rheologicar laboratory at
the Technion, Israel. Institute of
Technology, has been awarded
the coveted Weizmann Prize for
1956.
The award, made on the basis
of Prof. Reiner's activity in the
•field of rheol-
ogy, a new sci-
ence he helped
to found, deal-

sics having to
do with the

Technion Society.
Prior to World War I, Prof.
Reiner was an engineer em-
ployed by the Austria and Ro-
manian State Railways. He set-
tled in Palestine in 1922 as 'a
farm. laborer.
When the British Mandatory
government learned of his back-
ground in engineering, however,
they persuaded him to enter the
Department of Public Works,
which he served for 25 years.

tific work in aptrlied mechariics
which led to his work in. rhe-
ology. He is•presently a member
of the Technion academic staff,
and is carrying on a special re-
search project commissioned by
the United States Air Force.
He has published many scien-
tific papers and books on rhe-
ology which have been trans-
lated into several languages.
