A Child Asks on Passover:
Is It Hard to Be a Jew?'

-

By the Oak-Woodser
Although the recently-gone-
by holiday of Passover brings
with it a freshness of spirit
and a joyful atmosphere of
festive celebration, it can bring
forth also a torrent of questions
from the small fry.
In the most part these ques-
tions are healthy because they
symbolize the inquiring mind
that is inherent in the Jew.
There- are certain queries,
however, that are most diffi-
cult to answer, not necessarily
because the qUestion is too
complicated nor because the
knowledge to answer is not
there.
At this --moment, we are
thinking about the question
posed by a little three-year-
old who, like most children
of that age, is going through
the peanut-and-jelly-sandwich-
on-white-bread' phase.
When told that she would
have to forego that delicacy
because on Passover there
are certain foods that Jews
don't eat, she remarked, "It's
hard to be a Jew, isn't it?"
Try as one may, explaining
an incident that happened
nearly 3,500 years ago in a
far-oTf land to a child of three
is not an easy chore, as her
parents discovered..
But,. fortunately; with three-
year-olds their minds can be
made to change With the quick-
ness of a summer squall, and
the subject, too, is blown over
until another time. Especially
is this easy when you intro-
duce a plate of fried matzo
before them.
But, what of her que- stion.
Is it hard to be a Jew? Is it
more difficult for a Jew to ob-
serve the eight days of Pass-
over than it is for, say a Cath-
olic, to abstain during the 40
days of Lent?
It is not .in the rigidness of,
Judaism nor in its ritual that
we can approach this question,
for every religion has its dog-
mas, its customs.
Certainly, there are many
obstacles placed in the path
of being a good and observ-
ant Jew, when all around—
on the same streets, in the
classrooms, over radio and
television and in the movies
—the Jew is a minority.
The story of Easter, the pag-
eants of Christmas compete
with our own Hanukah and

Passover insofar as the seasons
go, even though the content of
both have no attachment.
It is difficult to compete with
Santa Claus or with the Easter
bunny which are popularized
so thoroughly at those times of
the year.
Without question, it is dif-
ficult for a Jewish child to be
a Jew, especially in this age of
commercialism—unless we help
them along.
We have not come this far,
through such obstacles as the
Inquistion, the pogroms and
Hitler, to lose faith simply be-
cause we are a minority. We
have always been a minority.
Let Passover be a start in
reintensifying our own be-
liefs in Judaism through
study, through the support
of our people in other lands,
through regular attendance
at the synagogue.
Then we will be able to an-
swer our child's question, "It's
hard to be a Jew isn't it?"
by saying:
"Yes, sometimes it's hard to
be a Jew, but here's why we
and our fathers and our fath-
ers before them have continued
to be Jews throughout the
ages . . ."

, no reason for pessimism and
expressed confidence that
American Jews would "stand
by" Israel in the days ahead.
Premier Ben Gurion praised
Dr. Silver as a "brave leader"
who had contributed heavily
to the State of Israel and also
hailed other leaders whom
American JeWry had given to
the Israeli community. Finally,
Mr. Ben Gurion expressed the
hope that the school—a Gen
eral Zionist pioneer enterprise
—would lead to further pio-
neering activity which Israel
needs so much.
Ambassador Lawson called
the school a "fitting" tribute to
Dr. Silver, whose labors in be-
half of Zionism he understood.
Referring to Dr. Silver's bring-
ing a message of goodwill from
President Eisenhower to Presi-
dent Ben Zvi last week, Am-
bassador Lawson said that
Rabbi Silver had "forged an-
other of the many ties he per-
sonally established between
our both nations."

British Monitions "Disappear"
In Egypt; London Shocked
LONDON (JTA)—As the last
contingent of British troops left
the Suez Canal, turning over
control of the largest military
base in the Middle East to Egyp-
tian troops, concern was re-
ported in British Parliamentary
circles that vast quantities of
British Army munitions would
"vanish" to find its way into
Egyptian Army storehouses.
The Sunday newspaper "Em-
pire News" reported that MPs
were shocked by reports that
complete trains of British am-
munition, mostly artillery shells,
had disappeared.
