Don't Rely on Poor George;
Some Day He Won't Do It
gy the Oak-Woodser
Poor George is the most over-
worked person in the world.
He's the chap of "Let George
do it" fame that assumes all
the thankless chores that no-
body else seems to want to do.
But he dOes them, and usually
he does them well. And; though
it may be a surprise to many
people, George gets a kick out
of doing them.
The George we have particu-
larly in • mind at this time is
George the suburbanite, the
fellow who feels that to make
his' community grow and pros-
per he " should take an active
part in what is happening.
There were many too few
Georges in several of Detroit's
suburbs this week, as voters at
the polls passed or decided upon
a bevy of candidates and issues.
In blossoming Southfield
Township, which builders and
real estate people say will take
over where Oak. Park is level-
ing off in the building boom,
George represented a mere 10
per cent of the voters who de-
cided whether to accept, a drain
project for nearly $1,000,000.
We can remember a sweet,
old lady we had as a civics
teacher in high school. Some-
times, high school kids can be
rather blase, and we freely dis-
missed her patriotic speecheS
calling for participation at the
polls as just so much flag wav-
ing.
Regardless of how we felt at
the tme, some of what she said
rubbed off, so we thought, on a
good many of her students. Yet,
today, when civics is a compul-
sory course for graduation in
most high schools, and good gov-
ernment is taught in our col-
" leges, some of our supposedly
well educated people ignore one
of their first duties — to them-
