50 Million Pounds for Defense to Swell
Israel's 775 Million Pound Budget

JERUSALEM — Finance Min-
ister Levi Eshkol presented
Parliament with a budget of
775,300,00'0 pounds for the 1956-
57 fiscal year, the largest bud-
get to date. He warned the
deputies that he shortly would
have for their approval a spe-
cial 50,000,000-pound defense
budget.
Despite the fact that the new
budget is 3.7 per cent higher
than last year's, Eshkol pledged
there Would be no increase- in
taxation, neither direct nor in-
direct. He said extra income
would come from 37,500 immi-
grants who swelled Israel's
population during the past year.
He • was also looking • into
means of reducing taxes for
families with many children,
he said.

In the picture of Israel's
economy which he drew for the
Knesset, Eshkol foresaw no
price rises in the coming year,
and said that last year the
government was able to keep
prices from rising more than
five per cent over the previous-
year—the smallest increase. in
Israel's history. - - •
The national income rose 12
per cent last year to 1,750,000
pounds, and investment rose by
34 per cent to 600,000,000
pounds. Employment rose seven

Emerges With New Israel 'Movement

The long-awaited re-emerg-
ence of Henry Montor and his
associates, as sponsors of a new
American Friends of Israel
movement materialized this
week.
A projected program was an-
nounced this week. by Rudolf
G. Sonneborn, president. of the
new movement, who said it was
adopted at a week-end confer-
ence of the movement's board
of directors.
In the first step to undertake
nationwide activity to mobilize
support for Israel, the Ameri-
can Friends of Israel broadened
its national leadership. Ira Guil-
den, of New York, chairman of
the board of directors of the
Trade Bank & Trust Co., chair-
man of the Title Guarantee &
