American Savincrs Sets Celebration
For Opening of Oak Park Branch

"What Scholars Think About
the Dead Sea Scrolls" will be
the topic of the second - lecture
in the series on the Scrolls, by
Dr. Isaac Rabinowitz, LaMed
Professor of Jewish Studies at
Wayne University, Monday eve-
ning, Feb. 13, in the small lec-
ture hail of the Art Institute.
The public is invited.
In his first lecture, Dr. Rabi-
nowitz discussed the back-
ground of the discovery of the
Scrolls and illustrated his lec-
ture with slides.
He _pointed out that the clis7
covery by an Arab shepherd of
the Kirbet Qumran Cave in
1947 led to extensive archeolo-
gical exploration in that area,
with the resultant discovery of
additional caves storing manu-
script treasures describing the
life and events of antiquity. He
showed a slide of a cave con-
taining primitive desks which

scriptorium where scribes wrote
or copied manuscripts on parch-
ment, papyrus leather and even

kept and illustrated the appear-
ance of certain scrolls as they
were found.
Dr. Rabinowitz projected two
slides to illustrate his views that
the Dead Sea Scrolls are genu-
ine produCts of the first century
of the Common Era and not as
some Scholars, like Dr. Solomon
Zeitlin, of Dropsie College,
claim that the scrolls are • actu-
ally products of the 10th cen-
tury of the Common Era.

cussed will include Bible, his-
