SAM ROBBrNS was waiting
for his :train at Michigan Central,
and bet-ame a bit-worried bythe
discrepancy between the various
clocks in the station, which
varied from each other as much
as a half-hour . . . He questioned
a passing porter about the matter,
who puzzled over it for ' a few
moments, then brightened and
replied,'"Well, sir, it really don't
make no difference about them

smugglers, according to Hutchi-
son. He sought to portray the
Syrian forces as representing no
danger to Israel.
When attacked at night by
Israel commandos, he said, the
Syrians were probably "sleep-
ily making their way to the
MAC tent for a cup of cof-
fee." He apparently referred to
a tent of the Mixed Armistice
Commission of the UN. This
was the first indication that
the UN might 'be operating
USO canteen facilities for Syr-
ian soldiers.
Hutchison complained that Is-
rael "gets the advantage" over
the Arabs because "the Israelis
have the best propaganda ma-
chine on earth and they use it
frequently." He indicated that
the Arabs were gaining ground
recently and that he was pleas-
ed by this growth of "world un-
derstanding."
A young man, who described

himself as a Palestinian Arab
refugee, put a question to Hut-'
chison in the question-and-an-
swer period that followed the
address. The ques,jion contained
an allegation that United States
policy in the past supported Is-
rael against the Arabs. Hutchi-
son replied, in part, that "we*
who "know the facts" must work
to present them.

WASHINGTON — A U. S. Na-
val Commander on active duty
in the Washington office of the
Chief of Naval Operations has
emerged as a vigorously anti-
Israel public speaker. He is
Commander Elmo H. Hutchison,
former chairman of the United
Nations Israel-Jordan Mixed Ar-
mistice Commission.
Hutchison's "objectivity" in
1954 was such that the Israel

governmnt found itself forced to

A typical Hutchison speech

opposition to American support-

Hutchison opposed American

the flow of Communist muni-

have to do is to give Israel 'any-

set off a war." At.. this -point
Hutchison referred to pre-1948
terrorism in Palestine and said
that today the influence of such
men as Menachem Beigin was
growing. He said they favored
aggression against the Arabs.
