A lYiddishe Mama' Nets
Allied Jewish Appeal $100

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — "A
Yiddishe Mama" contributed an-
other $100 to the Allied Jewish
AD peal here. It was not, however,
. a literal Yiddishe mama, many
of whom have done exactly that
in the past. This Yiddishe mama
was a song by the same name.
It all began when singer Billy
Daniels, who is appearing at a
night club here, sang the afore-
mentioned song. His rendition of
the number touched one of the
listeners; Isadore Katz, so much
that he stepped right up and
handed Mr, Daniels a check for
$100. _
Not -to be outdone, neither in
- being touched nor in. being
philanthrepie, -.Daniels promptly
handed the Icheck over to the
Afliezl Jewish Appeal.

Shipment of CARE packages for general Israel
relief was announced this week in a statement made
to The Jewish News by the national CARE office.
Franklin Irving, director of the CARE service division,
writes( -
"Surplus foods now being allocated to CARE by
the U. S. Government consist solely of non-Kosher
dairy products. Since the government of Isr&el will
permit CARE to distribute only strictly Kosher or
Parve' foods in that country, we cannot, of course, send
these surplus food packages there.
"Consequently, in order to provide those donors
who wish to aid Israel with a similar opportunity of
sending $1 packages, CARE purchased PARVE' prod-
ucts and made up the special $1 Food Crusade package
for Israel. We wish to point out that if the net contents,
not counting the weight by the package, were sent
individually by parcel post, the postage- alone would
cost $3.21. As. you can therefore see, this package priced
at $1. is a very- unusual value."
The special Israel CARE package approved by the
Israel government, has the following contents: three
pounds of flour, three pounds of rice, three pounds
beans and a pound of sugar.
- This package is for general relief only and may
-not be ordered for specified persons or addresses. De-
liveries will be made to needy persons named by the
welfare authorities of the Israel government. -
The $1 packages may be ordered, in any amount,
through CAREs American headquarters, 660 First Ave.,
New York 16.

HOLLYWOOD—MGM produc-
tion chief - Dore Schary, who
started his Hollywood - career as
a writer, says his studio is mak-
ing every possible effort - to bring
outstanding and promising writ-
ers to MGM for film assignments.
MGM is offering writers attrac-
tive contracts in the hope that
they will recognize the value of
writing for motion pictures.
Says Schary: "If a writer feels
that he'd like time to devote to
other writing projects, we're wil-
ling to accept mutually agreeable
arrangements. However, we're
hopeful that an eocposure to
screen writing will induce the
writer to continue to write for
the movies in the same manner
as.he writes books, plays or tele-
vision scripts."
Hollywood, Schary contends, is
in the midst of its greatest search
for suitable screen materials,
making the development of writ-
ing talent all the more important.

latest purchase is Herman
Wouk's No. 1 best selling novel,
"M a r j o r i e Morningstar," for
which the Warner Brothers have

himself with his last novel, "The

whether the sale involving
