Histadrut Speaker Reports
Dismal Life of Russian Jews

.

Responding to an address by
Chaim Shurer, editor of Davar,
the largest daily newspaper in
Israel, local workers of the His-
tadrut Campaign moved closer
to their goal of $250,000.
Shurer, speaking Sunday after-
noon; in the Workmen's Circle
auditorium, assured the gather-
ing that "there are no signs of
either depression or panic in Is-
rael today." The atmosphere, in-
stead, he added, is charged with
grim determination to see the
present situation through to its
destined end.
"We in Israel are, aware," he
said, "that we. can look in the
direction of the American Jew-
ish community with assurance
of full support. We ask only
that your support be commen-
surate • with the gravity of the
situation."
Shurer, who spent 40 days in
Russia, behind the Iron Curtain,,
presented a dismal picture of
Soviet Russia's 2,500,000 Jews.
"During my entire visit
through the vast Soviet terri-
tory, I came into contact with
thousands of Jews," Shurer said.
"Not once, however, was I given
any opportunity to engage in
conversation of any - duration or
any significance."
"All of my meetings • with
individuals were fleeting — usu-
ally on the streets or in the sub-
ways, and lasted only a few
minutes. This was long enough
to determine the calculated, sys-
tematic starvation to which these
two and a half million people
are being subjected, and which
in the end must completely
obliterate them unless sweeping
changes in Soviet policy are
made in the very near future."
Shurer added that not once
during his stay was he able to
find a Jewish publication, and,
with the exception of a single
synagogue which is permitted in
each of the large cities, he said
he could find no symbol of or-
ganized Jewish life—no organiz-
ations, theaters, schools or
libraries.

nearly-completed Labor Zionist
Center, Schaefer north of Seven

from workers. Similar gather-
ings are scheduled regularly
thereafter in an effort to speed
the conclusion of the 'Campaign.
Histadrut spokesmen said that
most encouraging is the percent-
age of increase being maintained
by most volunteers, who are
averaging contributions of 14
percent of last year.
