The rumors have spread very
quickly. PerhapS, in most of the
world, people are willing —to ac-
cept the: thought of peace before
the , fact. And then there are
those that help Egypt with her
smoke screen. The British, adept
at camouflage, are useful friends.
The story spreads further each
day, sinks in a little deeper, de-
ceives, a little more. Where cy-
nicism is not the order of the
day, as in London, or perfidy the
plan, as in Cairo, there is the less
sinister but not less dangerous
receptivity to the wishful think-
ing as in Washington.
It is as though, for various
reasons and a diversity of aims,
much of the world has united in
an all but hypnotic effort to per-
suade itself that peace is on the
agenda, that the Arabs are pre-
paAd to talk, that Israel will
"somehow or other" give in.
Every day in every way, the pa-
pers croon, the dangers of war
in the Middle East are lessened.
Perhaps if we wish upon a star
it will 'all come out all right in
the end. Perhaps Egypt will sud-
denly take that one withheld
step towards amity, perhaps Is-
rael will cede another sliver of
her meager territory to satisfy
the unreasoning Arab thirst for
more land, perhaps the CzeCh
aims will not actually be used
to threaten Israel with annihila-
tion. But the Arabs are not idle.
In Israel, there is no slackening
of caution. Here people face real-
ity, unsoothed by enemy propa-
ganda.
Yes, the front pages look a little
strange. They have looked that
way before. In 1936, in 1939, in
more recent years. Whenever men

.would do well..to penetrate, the
riage of lies that emanate each
day from the Arab states and
