Rosina Falik, 9, living with her parents at the Shelter of United
Hias Service, the Jewish international migration agency, in New
York, while awaiting final arrangements for permanent settle-
ment, lights the first candle on the Menorah in rehearsal for
Hanukah which starts today. The festival will be observed by a
large group of recent immigrants at the Shelter. The metal can-
delabrum was designed and made by a well-known sculptor in
a D.P. camp in Germany and was presented to United Hias service
by him in grateful appreciation of the migration agency's assist-
ance in helping him to immigrate to a country of sanctuary in
the New World,

Recitation of Verse
For Identification

I
i

Reciting a verse from the Bible
each day which begins with the
first letter of one's name and
ends with the last letter is a well
known custom, and in many tra-
ditional prayer books a series of
verses is to be found cor-
responding to a respective list
of names.

One of the commentaries claims
that this is a means of having
an individual remember his
name properly so that when he
is asked for it on the Day of
Judgment he will have it in
mind.
Some of the commentaries give
a more practical background for
the custom. In ancient times the
people of Israel . were driven,
persecuted and many times cap-
tured and enslaved. It became a
custom to protect the identity of
the children.
Each child was taught a Biblical
verse. Many times this verse be-
gan with the first letter of the
child's name and ended with the
last letter. Thereafter, should the
child be captured, imprisoned
and converted, as happened in
many instances, the original
identity of the child could be
learned by asking for the verse
which the child kept repeating
over and over in his mind. The
custom served as a means of
determining the identity of Jews
who had been captured.
Many times in the Talmud the
text mentions that some child
was asked to quote a verse from
the Bible and upon this verse
a course of action was noted. To
this day this custom has re-
mained with us and to make
sure that the verse is repeated
regularly it was ordained that
it be repeated by the individual
after- the main body of prayer—
the Sh'moneh Esreh.
