congregation was formed in the
city of Detroit—Temple Israel.
From a nucleus of 30 families
who attended the organizational
meeting, Temple Israel, before it
was three months old, had be-
come one of the largest congrega-
tions in the country. Today it
numbers 1,200 families.
The dedication of the •sanctu-
ary of Temple Israel was a great
moment in the life of its rabbi,

'Charity Delivers from Death'
The custom' of circulating a
charity box exclaiming that
"charity delivers from death"
during a funeral manifests it-.
self in different ways in differ-
ent communities. In some the
sexton does it. In others, charity
workers do it. The reasons are
varied. Some explain that this
is a symbol that the deceased
gave charity in his. life time and
thus is to be saved from a "spir-
itual" death. Others claim_ that
charity saves one from what is
called "eternal death," meaning
that . it guarantees resurrection
when the proper time comes.
Still others say that the col-
lection of charity combines all
those present into one social
unit, to show that all' are united
with the bereaved family in one
clan of friendship. At times of
distress it is natural to desire
unity among family and friends
an a common fund which is
collected for charitable purposes
is a good means to indicate this,
especially- when all are praying
for the soul of the deceased as
well as the needs of the survi-
vors.
