`Zemiros` on the Sabbath
The songs that are customar-
ily sung at the Sabbath table are
traditionally called "Zemiros."
The word means "songs" and
could technically apply to any
song .
The custom of singing Psalms
and hymns - at the table on the
Sabbath is mentioned in several
sources of the Talmud and Mid-
rash.

In statements made to the
magazine • writer, 'Dr. Orlinsky
disputes several of the conten-
tions which have been taken for
granted in connection with the
Isaiah document and others
found in Holy Land caves.
One generally accepted as-
sumption is that the group de-
scribed in one of the scrolls
called "The Manual of Dis-
cipline" is the sect known as
the Essenes. Dr. Orlinsky as-
serts that this is not at all
certain since some of the prac-
tices described "conflict flat-
ly" with statements about the
Essenes made in contemporary
sources.
Dr. Orlinsky also denies that
the ancient age of the scrolls has
been established. He points out
that testshave been made not
of the scrolls, but of the linen
wrappings - in which they were
found.
Dr. Orlinsky's view is at vari-
ance with many writers, includ-
ing Edmund Wilson, whose
lengthy article about the scrolls
first appeared in the New Yorker
magazine and has been published
as a book. Allegations by Mr.
Wilson and other writers that
Jews were fearful that the docu-
ments would "destroy the au-
thority of the traditional text of
the Bible" are disputed by Dr.
Orlinsky, who told Miss Brodsky
that more and more scholars are
coming around to a position of
skepticism about the value of the
scrolls.
Dr. Orlinsky's own skep-
ticism is deepened by the poor
Hebrew used by the scribes
who, says the scholar, must
have been "sloppy and ignor-
ant." He pointed out a number
of linguistic errors in the
scrolls to Miss Brodsky.
As for the Book of Isaiah, the
contents of one of the scrolls, Dr.
Orlinsky categorically says, "So
far as the wording and under-
standing of the traditional Heb-
rew text are concerned, it need
never have been discovered. It
has added virtually nothing to
our store of knowledge."
Dr. Orlinsky is professor of
Bible at the New York branch
of the Hebrew Union College—
Jewish Institute of Religion. He
was the only Jewish scholar who
participated in the translation of
the Bible which resulted in the
recent new authorized version of
the Protestant churches. His most
book, "Ancient Israel,"
