Hanukah Life and Lore

Greetings on Hanukah

By ELI ZUR

SIDNEY M. SCHOTT

The Maccabeans lit the Hanu-
kah tapers in the big Temple
Menorah. What became of the
Temple, Menorah? Here is a
wonderful theme for a mystery
story. According to Talmud, it
weighed 96 pounds—all of pure
gold. When the independence of
'the Jewish State was finally de-
stroyed by the Romans, the
Menorah apparently' was car-
ried off to Rome in the general
loot. • That the Romans thought
it a great prize is to be seen
by the fact that in the Arch
erected in Rome to celebrate
the capture .of Jerusalem, there
is a picture of the Menorah.
Later it seems to have been re ,
turned to Jerusalem and during
succeeding generations, it fell
into the handi of various con-
querors, being carried 'off to.
Africa on one excursion.. But

shall give 'you a chance to be

you can tell me which one it
is I shall let you out."
"It's the left one," said the
prisoner - without a moment's
hesitation. The general admit-
ted that was correct but asked
how the prisoner had guessed.
"That was easy," answered the
Jew. "It looked at me so kindly."

as though Destiny insisted on it
remaining' in its ancient habitat,
it was finally returned to Pales-
tine and some hold that it was
secreted somewhere in an un-
derground vault of one of the
Christian churches of old Jerus-
alem.
But where is it? And how
shall it be found?
* * *
The Temple Menorah was
fashioned after the almond tree.
The Menorah has been a cons-
tant source of inspiration in
Jewish tradition. When Theo-
dore Herzl first began to brood
over the problem of the Jew,
his mind turned to the Menorah
and the brave Maccabeans whom
it symbolized. One of his best
pieces of writing at this • time
was a: little feuilleton in which
he tellS the story of a man, not
unlike Herzl himself, who,
faced by a hostile world, begins'
to think back to his _ancient
morningsi and slowly begins the
revival of 1.4s faith. He begins
by observing Hanukah and from
that step he proceeds to a gen,
eral revivication of and pride in
his JeWish. heritage. 7
Sithilarly, when the young
American poetess, Emma Laz-
arus, stirred by the pogroms
against the Jews in RuSsia,
turned to the Menorah, calling
upon the Jews to "recall the
glorious Maccabean age."
Fine Menorahs are now being
made of the sands and clays of
the Neb. A variety of ceramic
enterprises, financed by - Israel
BOnds, 'are now turning out
menorahs and a variety of other
articles at Beersheba.

- Why do Jews eat latkes on
Hanukah?
According to legend, Judith
used these cheese pancakes to
help win a battle for Jewish in
dependence. She fed the latkes
to Holofernes, the Syrian gen-
eral, to make -him thirsty and
when - he became thirsty, she
gave him wine and got him
drunk and then she made him
captive.
Antiochus, the Syrian com-
mander, forbade teaching or
Study of Judaism. Jewish schools
were invaded by agents of the
Syrian commander and those
found engaged in studying the
Torah taken into custody.. The
young Jews found a way to out-
wit the enemy police. _They
carried tops or "drehdels" with
them and when the young stu-
dents found one of the GestapO
approaching, they hurriedly
pulled out their "drehdels" and
began to play with them. No-
body could be arrested for a
friendly game of "drehdel."
