Israel Joins in Passing UN Resolution on Refugees

UNITED NATION S, N. Y.
(JTA)—The General Assembly's
special political committee adopt-
ed by a vote of 38 in favor, no
opponents and 19 abstentions a
resolution providing for the' con-
tinuation of the United Nations
Relief and Works Agency, for
Palestine and Arab Refugees,
setting the agency's budget for
1956 at $26,800,000.
Israel voted for the resolution.

Mail Early
For Holidays

The 19 abstentions 'included all
the members of the Arab League
bloc here, most of the countries
represented in the Asian-African
caucus and the Soviet Union and
its satellite states. The resolution
was sponsored by the United
States, Britain and Turkey.

Earlier deadlines for photo-
graphs and editorial material
have been posted by The Jew-
ish News for its editions of
Friday, Dec. 30, and Friday,
Jan. 6, because of the occur-
rence of Christmas on Monday,
Dec. 26, and New Year's Day,
Jan. 2.
Advertising deadlines will
remain the same for both is-
sues as follows:
Display advertising, 12 noon,
Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Jan. 3;
display classified advertising,
4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27 and
Jan. 3; and liner classified ad-
vertising, 11 a.m., Wednesday,
Dec. 28 and Jan. 4.

to mail early for the holidays,
stating that the present vol-
ume of mail and packages in-
dicates a record-breaking sea-

OTTAWA, (JTA)—Israel For-
eign Minister Sharett appealed
to the Canadian government for
arms for Israel for defensive pur-
poses and to maintain the peace
and stability of the Middle East,
when he conferred with Prime
Minister Louis St. Laurent and
Minister for External Affairs
Lester B. Pearson, it was learned
here after Mr. Sharett's depar-
ture for the United States. The
Israel Ambassador to Canada,
Michael Comay, participated in
the conferences.
Mr. Sharett, who visited
Canada last week as a guest of
the Canadian government, was
honored at an official dinner
tendered by Mr. Pearson. At that
dinner, Mr. Sharett expressed
Israel's gratitude for Canadian
assistance, including that which
was given in the creation of the
Jewish State.
Mr. Pearson, who expressed
the hope that he would soon be
able to visit Israel, said he want-
ed "Israel to know that it has
its Canada a good and permanent
friend." Cabinet Ministers, Su-
preme Court Justices and leading
Members of Parliament were
among the dinner guests.

Income of $180,000,000
From Campaign Fund
Goes to 46 U.S. Agencies

NEW YORK (JTA) — Forty-
six national and overseas Jewish
agencies which are major bene-
ficiaries of Jewish welfare funds
in this country had an income
of $180 million in 1954, including
$64 million in special loans for
the United Jewish Appeal raised
by the Jewish communities.
Local Jewish institutions had an
income of $118 million during the
same year.
This was reported by the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds in an, analysis
of developments affecting Jewish
philanthropy in the United States
during 1954. The report empha-
sized that the welfare funds also
borrowed the $64 million for the
UJA special loan project.

Middle East tensions following
recent developments there was a
part of a special conference called
here by Italian Foreign Minister
Gaetano Martino, with the parti-
cipation of Italian Ambassadors
in the principal capitals of the
world.
