The golden wedding anniver-
sary of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob
Shevitz last weekend was a
double celebration, in that it
marked not only 50 years of de-
votion by Mr. and Mrs. Shevitz
to each other and to their family,
but as many years of dedicated
effort .to their community and
fellow Jews.
Although both c o m e from
Crodno Province in Poland, they
met here in Detroit, and were
married Dec. 3, 1905. Mr. Shevitz
came here in 1892, two years after
his parents. His future wife, the
former Anna . Levin, came to
America in 1902.
For over 40 years Mr. Shevitz
has been engaged in the real
estate and building business here.
He was particularly active in the
development of the Dexter boule-
vard area when it emerged as
the focal point of the Jewish
community. -
Active in major communal ac-
tivities, Mr. Shevitz has been par-
tidularly prOininexit in synagogue
life, ,being one of the founders

At the time of its very begin-
ning, Mr. and Mrs. Shevitz de-
layed moving into their new home
so the congregation could have its
use for High Holiday and daily

Many years later, Mr. Shevitz
joined and became president of
Cong. Emanuel. He was an active
force in its merger with Cong.
Beth Tefilo, and served for many
years as the president of Cong.
Beth Tefilo Emanuel, the Taylor
Street Shul. -
He has • also worked many
years in behalf of the com-
munity's educational institutions,
serving the United Hebrew
Schools when its first building
was erected at Kirby and St. An-
toine.
He also was an active support-
er of the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
when it was established on Dex :
ter and COrtland. He is still a
member of the Yeshivah board of
directors, and is also on the
Vaad . Hayeshivoth.
Mrs. Shevitz is a charter mem-
ber of the Detroit Council of
Pioneer Women, a long-time
member -of the Ladies Auxiliary
of the United Hebrew Schools and
a member of Hadassah.
Helping their parents to cele-
brate the -anniversary were their
four children, Mrs. Joseph Lee,
Mrs. Walter Klein, - Sidney M.
Shevitz, all of Detroit, and 12
gfandchildren. They have an-
other daughter, Mrs. Ben-Zion
Ilan, and three grandchildren at
Kibbutz Afikim, Israel.

of 19901 Warrington, announce

the engagement of their daugh-
ter, Lois, to Harvey Gordon, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Gordon,
of 19162 Wisconsin.
Mr. Gordon is a senior at the
Detroit Institute of Technology
college of pharmacy where he is
president of Alpha Zeta Omega
fraternity. A fall wedding is
planned.

Temple Israel Art Group
To Offer Family Program

The Department of Michigan
Jewish War Veterans and its
Ladies Auxiliary will play host
to between 75 and 100 _service-
men from Selfridge Field and
other outlying military bases at
a Hanukah party.
Irwin Simms, of the Lt. Ray-
mon Zussman Post, and Bernard
Hoffman, of Lt. Roy F. Green
Post, are co-chairmen of the
event, to be held at 8:30- p.m.,
Saturday, in the Memorial Home.
All members of JWV and JW-
VA with their- wives and hus-
bands are invited to participate
in the program, which will fea-
ture a candlelighting ceremony
by Rabbi Herbert S. Eskin, De-
partment chaplain.
Refreshments, including latkes,
dancing and games are planned
for the evening. There is no ad-
mission charge.

Noah Nachbush Records
Two New Yiddish Songs

Noah Nachbush, well known
Yiddish actor, who has befriended
many Detroiters during his nu-
merous visits here for perform-
ances before orgahizations and in
theaters, has just issued a record-
ing of new songs.
His latest record features
Peretz Hirshbein's "The Fallen
Star," and "A Tree'.s Prayer."
Words - and melody for the
latter _ are by Mr.' Nachbush.
Music was arranged by Laura
Cherniaysky. Harold Green is the
accompanist.
Both songs are rendered with
deep feeling and will be found
