'INF Dinner to Honor Laikin
On 60th Birthday, 'Monday

Benjamin Laikin, one of De-
troit's most distinguished Jewish
leaders, will be honored Monday
evening, at a dinner at Holiday
Manor arranged by the Jewish
National Fund Council as the
culminating event in the project
. to plant the Laikin Forest in Is-
, rael, in honor of the Zionist lead-
er's 60th birthday.
_While it has been plannecl,pri-
marily by the Lab-or Zionist Or-
_ •ganization. of Detroit, the Benja-
min Laikin Forest Committee, of
i which William Hordes is general
; chairman, includes .representa-
tives of many local organizations
:. and congregations.
Distinguished national leaders
:and scholars -will •participate - in
the• event, and the main speakers
will be Pinchas Cruso, LZOA
-leader; Abe Tuvim, executive di-
rector of the Jewish National
Fund Foundation, and J. J.
Schwartz, distinguished p o e t.
; Shoshana Freedman_will sing, ac-
companied by Bella Goldberg.

A former president of both the
Jewish National Fund and the
Zionist Councils, Mr. Laikin for
many years served on the na-
tional central executive commit-
tee of Poale Zion and is one of
the leading guides of Foale Zion
Branch 3 in Detroit.
Mr. Laikin has not limited his
activities to Zionism. He is a
patron of the arts, a lover of
music and a supporter of many
Yiddish literary projects.
He was one of the organizers of
the Detroit Jewish Community
Council and served on its execu-
tive committee for many years;
was a director of YIVO and is
a member. of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
Born in the small White Rus-
sian town of Bobolov, in the
Minsk Gubernia, he studied in
the chedorim there and later was
a student in the Bobrvisk• Yesh-
iva.
He came to this Country in
March of 1914, first settled in
Baltimore, then went to Philadel-
phia, from there went to Massa-
chtitetts and returned .to Balti-
more for another 10 years' resi-
dence.
While : working for a Baltimore
firm, he toured the entire United
StateS, visited 16 foreign coun-
tries in Europe as well as Hawaii
and Japan. He settled in Detroit
in 1929.
Last year, he visited' Israel to-
gether with Mrs. Laikin, the for-
mer.Anna Lois Goiomb whom he
married in 1922.: . They have four
daughters.
Two daughters live in Detroit.
They are Mrs. Beth-Sheva David-
sari and Mrs: Shulamith Tuchman.
Another daughter, Mrs. Pnina
Wilkins, lives in Baltimore, Md.,
and -is the mother of three child-
ren. The fourth daughter, Judith.,
is attached to the United States
Embassy in London, England.
