The Suburban Community

Cong. Beth.Shaloni
Hanukah in the Suburbs
To Install Rabbi
Time to Return to Old Ideals At =,
Dec.
14 Event.
Gentile living side by side. in
By the Oak-Woodser

The warm glow of Hanukah,
one of the most joyous of the
Jewish festivals, will be radiat-
ed beginning tonight when Jews
in suburban Detroit join with
Jews the world over in lighting
the first of eight candles.
Preparations for the holidays
started in many harries a few
weeks back when parents avail-
ed themselves of any number of
Hanukah workshops held in the
community to learn how to pre-
sent the holiday in colorful fash-
ion to their children.
Another sign of Hanukah's
approach was the number of
people flocking to toy stores to
buy gifts for the childrenL-one
for each of the holiday's eight
days.
But more than toys and color-
ful decorations, Hanukah has
a very special meaning. Literal-
ly, it means • dedication—dedica-
‘ tion to the ideals of a faith re-
born centuries ago when a cruze
of oil; supposedly enough to
burn only one day, miraculous-
ly lasted a full eight days _until
a. new supply was made.
It is also a time of dedication
beCause it marks a great vic-
tory, more than the triumph of
the Maccabees over the, Greeks
and Syrians, but of the ideals
of the Maccabees — that of a
compassionate God --- over • the
worshippers of the gods.
The challenge of dedication
offered by Hanukah to suburb-
anites is a call for identifica-
tion of ourselves as. Jews, not
_ alone as joiners but as parti-
cipants in Jewish life.
The future of American Jew-
ry rests in suburban Detroit, as
it does, in suburban areas
throughout the country. Sounds
dramatic? Well, it's desperately
dramatic!
As we Sat last Sunday at the
Jewish &wok Fair listening to
Edwin Wolf II, the President of
the Jewish Publication Society,
we realized what he said - about
suburban- Jewry balding the keY
to Jewry's. survival in America
was Most -true.
Wolf said that while Jew and

the suburbs is good, there also
is the great danger of social
pressure on the Jewish child,
causing him to adopt the atti-
tude "Why do I have to be a
Jew?"
This old prOblem • will become
even more acute if the parents
of these -children cannot give a
'satisfactory answer. The an-
swer, he said, lies in an in-
formed Jewry, and this can be
achieved through Jewish books.
Naturally, he spoke to urge
memberships in the JPS (which,
incidentally, can be obtained for
as little as $5), but more than
that he warned that unless we
return to being "the people of
the Book," in a few generations
there will be no more American
Jews.
, This was not an idol threat,
but an enlightening solution to
a problem, which is plaguing
religious and educational lead-
ers; namely, how can we escape
being social and I or philan-
thropic Jews, but religious Jews.
By learning about being a
Jew, through Jewish books,
or having - books available to
answer -our children's ques-
tions about JUdaism we have
taken a step - in the direction
of perpetuating Jewry in Atir- .
erica.

It's still not too late to buy
books- for our children, our fam-
ily and our friends for Hanu-
kah—and a wonderful gift is a
membership in the Jewish Pub-.
lication Society. Try looking in
to it.
